The Firefighter/EMT is responsible for providing emergency response, firefighting, rescue, and emergency medical services in support of personnel, visitors, facilities, and mission-critical operations at Wallops Flight Facility. As a member of the emergency response team, this position responds to fires, medical emergencies, aircraft incidents, hazardous materials events, technical rescues, and other emergencies requiring immediate action to protect life, property, and operational assets.
The Firefighter/EMT performs emergency medical care within the scope of EMT certification while actively participating in firefighting, rescue, and incident stabilization activities. This position supports operational readiness through ongoing training, equipment inspections, emergency preparedness activities, and maintenance of required certifications and qualifications.
Responsibilities
~2 min read- →Respond to fire, rescue, medical, hazardous materials, aircraft-related, and other emergency incidents.
- →Perform firefighting, rescue, patient care, and incident stabilization activities in accordance with departmental procedures and accepted emergency response practices.
- →Assess emergency situations and assist in implementing appropriate response strategies to mitigate hazards and protect life and property.
- →Provide emergency medical care, basic patient assessment, treatment, and stabilization within the scope of EMT certification and medical direction.
- →Participate in search and rescue operations, victim removal, emergency evacuation activities, and patient transport support functions.
- →Support emergency response operations involving launch facilities, aircraft activities, industrial systems, and other specialized environments.
- →Operate safely and effectively under stressful and rapidly evolving emergency conditions.
- →Deploy and operate firefighting equipment, hose lines, nozzles, extinguishers, ladders, ventilation equipment, and associated emergency response tools.
- →Perform vehicle and machinery extrication utilizing hydraulic rescue equipment and specialized rescue tools.
- →Participate in technical rescue operations involving confined spaces, rope rescue, trench rescue, structural collapse incidents, and related specialty disciplines consistent with assigned certifications.
- →Assist in hazardous materials response activities in accordance with training and certification requirements.
- →Operate in hazardous environments requiring respiratory protection, fall-protection systems, chemical protective clothing, and other specialized personal protective equipment.
- →Complete reports, inspection records, training documentation, inventories, and other required records accurately and in a timely manner.
- →Support fire prevention activities, public safety initiatives, facility assessments, and pre-fire planning efforts.
- →Maintain effective communication with supervisors, coworkers, customers, contractors, and responding agencies.

Requirements
~2 min readMinimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- DoD/IFSAC, Pro Board, or State Firefighter I.
- DoD/IFSAC, Pro Board, or State Firefighter II.
- Commonwealth of Virginia Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification.
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification.
- Emergency Vehicle Operator Course (EVOC) certification.
- FEMA NIMS IS-100, IS-200, IS-700, and IS-800.
- Must be capable of working effectively in stressful, hazardous, and physically demanding environments.
- Obtain and maintain a Secret clearance.
- Must be at least 21 years of age
- Successfully pass background and drug screening
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous experience in firefighting, emergency medical services, military emergency response, industrial fire protection, airport firefighting, or a related public safety field preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of firefighting principles, fire behavior, fire suppression techniques, and firefighter safety practices.
- Knowledge of emergency medical care, patient assessment, treatment protocols, and EMT procedures.
- Knowledge of emergency response operations, ARFF procedures, hazardous materials awareness, and technical rescue fundamentals.
- Knowledge of incident command principles and emergency scene operations.
- Ability to assess emergency situations and make sound decisions under pressure.
- Ability to safely operate firefighting equipment, emergency medical equipment, communications systems, and emergency response vehicles.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team while maintaining professionalism and accountability.
