Entry-Level Mining/Civil Design Engineer

Kleinfelder is seeking an Entry-Level Mining/Civil Design Engineer to join our growing southeast engineering team.  The ideal candidates will participate in and contribute to a diverse range of engineering projects and services in our team-oriented environment.  Under the direction of experienced engineers, you will gain exposure to Mining, Industrial & Commercial Land Development, and other engineering projects. This position is available in our Raleigh, NC office.

Under supervision and working with experienced staff, the successful candidates will complete mining/civil engineering designs and the generation of construction plans and specifications, technical calculations, exhibits and reports primarily serving mining clients.

Responsibilities include: 

• →Utilize Civil 3D including alignments, profiles and grading features to produce engineered construction plans and sheet set ups.
• →Utilize Civil 3D, Carlson, etc. to prepare mine plans, geological modeling, reserve estimates, and operational scheduling.
• →Prepare a variety of Civil 3D Plans, maps, and exhibits.
• →Prepare regulatory permit drawings, applications, and other submittal requirements.
• →Perform hydrologic and hydraulic modeling and calculations to support engineering design.
• →Work in conjunction with mining/civil engineers and project leaders to develop engineering designs.
• →Follow project schedules and allotted hours by Project manager.
• →Follow internal and/or client procedures and standards.
• →Evaluating design alternatives to solve constructability, regulatory, and site challenges
• →Performing site visits to perform job scoping and coordinating with survey crews, SUE, Geotech, etc.

• →Perform other engineering and project-support duties while developing technical knowledge of mining and civil construction operations.

• Self-starter who can work independently and with team members.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work as a team player, take direction, and interact well with others.
• Basic understanding of Site Grading & Storm Drainage, Erosion and Sediment Control and Storm Water Best Management Practices with strong desire to learn and an interest in mining/civil engineering design.
• Basic understanding of civil construction, surveying, earthworks, and engineering drawings.
• Familiarity with AutoCAD/Civil 3D, Carlson, Microsoft Excel, and other engineering/project software is beneficial.
• Strong communication, problem-solving, organizational, and documentation skills.
• Ability to work primarily in a office environment and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.
• Willingness to learn mining operations, construction practices, safety requirements, and applicable engineering standards.

• Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, mining engineering, construction engineering, or a related engineering/mining discipline.
• 0–2 years of experience, including internships, co-ops, or civil/mining engineering experience.
• Engineer-in-Training (EIT) Certificate preferred.
• Basic knowledge and experience using AuotCAD is required, proficiency with Civil 3D is preferred.
