Program Director duties will be consistent with ACGME accreditation requirements.  The Program Director will have academic faculty appointment through the affiliate medical school.  The type of such appointment depends on the experience and academic qualifications including research and scholarly activities.

 

Under the direction of the Regional VP Medical Education (RVP), the Program Director is responsible for the general administration, curriculum planning, recruitment, and teaching and supervision of the FM Residency Program (“FM Program or Program”). The Program Director establishes the strategic direction of the Program and is responsible for the standards, quality and reputation of such. The Program Director is expected to support integration of the FM Program with physician practices and hospital clinical services in a manner that enhances value and quality, and that promotes an optimal environment for professional practice and medical education

Responsibilities of the Program Director are as follows:

  • →Clinical Teaching and Supervision of Residents
  • →The Program Director must assure that residents are assigned clinical responsibilities appropriate for their level of training and level of knowledge and skill, are properly supervised in clinical assignments, and provide safe and effective patient care. The Program Director shall develop and maintain written supervision standards, requirements, and procedures in accordance with current ACGME requirements.
  • →Core Program Clinical Teaching
  • →Maintain active clinical practice in Family medicine 
  • →As directed by the RVP, organize and direct the FM Program, including the organization of rotations and other educational activities at all clinical sites that participate in the Program. This includes responsibility to ensure the quality of didactic and clinical education in all sites that participate in the Program.
    • →Have supervisory authority over all educational tracks in the program.
  • →The Program Director shall be responsible for establishing the clinical assignments and schedules of the residents to achieve the educational objectives of the program. Resident schedules and assignments for each resident in the program are expected to be established for the entire academic year not later than May 1 for the upcoming academic year beginning July 1.    
  • →Supervise any FM subspecialty training programs sponsored and linked to their core program to ensure compliance with the ACGME accreditation standards.
  • →General Administration
  • →The Program Director is responsible for the preparation and implementation of the FM residency curriculum to provide a high quality education program to meet the requirements of the ACGME and the relevant national board(s).
  • →Maintain current knowledge of the accreditation and operational requirements of the residency program, including monitoring current trends and anticipating changes. Maintain working knowledge of GME finance and reimbursement as it pertains to the FM Program.
    • →Submit reports on program, faculty, and Resident/fellow performance to the Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC) as requested by the Chair of the GMEC.
  • →Ensure adherence to sponsoring institution and ACGME policies and procedures consistent with the institutional and program requirements, including but not limited to policies for resident duty hours and the working environment, moonlighting, grievance procedures, and due process, as established by the Graduate Medical Education Committee, and in compliance with the ACGME Institutional Requirements.
  • →The Program Director shall work in cooperation with the Designated Institutional Official (DIO), the RVP and members of hospital administration to assure the effective, efficient, and fiscally responsible operation of the FM Program. The Program Director shall articulate a clear operational plan for the residency program, and advocate for resources, including faculty, facilities, educational services or materials, and finances, required for optimal operation of the program.  
  • →Ensure the wellness of residents by fostering an environment of teamwork, cooperation, and caring.
    • →Ensure that the residency does not place excessive reliance on residents for service as opposed to education.
    • →Identify a qualified subspecialty education coordinator in the following subspecialties; cardiology, critical care, endocrinology, hematology, gastroenterology, geriatric medicine, infectious diseases, nephrology, oncology, pulmonary disease, and rheumatology.
  • →GME Committees/Meetings
  • →As requested by the RVP and DIO, attend educational programs sponsored by the Association of Program Directors in the appropriate discipline and other education related activities intended to maintain and improve the quality of the Program.
  • →The Program Director may participate on the Consortium Graduate Medical Education Committee, and with hospital committees as requested by the RVP/ DIO. If appointed by RVP, chair the other relevant committees as needed.
  • →GME Lecturing/Teaching Conferences
  • →Be available and accessible to residents at the primary teaching site(s).
  • →Oversee development of an effective resident advising program and ensure timely and effective feedback.
    • →Promote resident scholar activity.
  • →As set forth by the sponsoring institution and RVP, attend teaching conferences.
  • →GME Recruiting/Interviewing
  • →The Program Director shall help determine the optimal process for candidate review.
  • →In alignment with the RVP and the Associate Program Director, recruit and select candidates for the Program through the National Residency Matching Program.
    • →Adhere to Consortium and medical center policies.
  • →GME Research/Scholarly Activity
  • →The Program Director must personally demonstrate scholarly activity as evidenced by activities such as peer reviewed funding, publication of original research in a peer-reviewed journal, publication of review articles of chapters in textbooks, publication or presentation of case reports or clinical series at local, regional, or national professional and scientific society meetings. The Program Director is expected to regularly participate in clinical discussions, rounds, journal clubs, and research conferences in a manner that promotes a spirit of inquiry and scholarship.
  • →Assure that faculty meet research and scholarly activity requirements of the program, including active participation in the clinical discussions, rounds, journal clubs, and research conferences in a manner that promotes a spirit of inquiry and scholarship.
  • →Resident Evaluation/Monitoring
  • →The Program Director along with the Associate Program Director, and the faculty are responsible for evaluating resident performance in relation to the educational objectives of the program and the ACGME’s milestones. The Program Director shall establish and maintain a Clinical Competency Committee in accordance with ACGME requirements and shall maintain appropriate documentation of the evaluation process in accordance with ACGME requirements.
  • →The Program Director, with input from the Associate Program Director and faculty, is responsible for making decisions to promote residents to the next level of training in the program and for decisions to graduate residents upon completion of the program. The Program Director shall have responsibility for documenting completion of training and qualifications for each resident, as required by the applicable board(s). The Program Director is also responsible for providing verification of residency education for all residents, including those who leave the Program prior to completion.
    • →When applicable, write letters of recommendation or otherwise serve as a reference for residents.
  • →Program Evaluation
  • →Provide accurate statistical and narrative information in accordance with the requirements of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and the ACGME’s Review Committee for the appropriate discipline. This includes but is not limited to the program application forms and annual program resident updates to the ADS, and ensuring that the information submitted is accurate and complete.
  • →Organizing the faculty to deliver a consistently high quality education program. Evaluate the performance of faculty in meeting program objectives, including resident satisfaction with the program. Develop and implement programs to enhance the knowledge, clinical expertise, and teaching skills of the faculty.

    Interested candidates must have three to five years of Family Medicine post residency clinical experience as well as core faculty experience in an ACGME-accredited Family Medicine Residency program. A minimum of 3 years of GME teaching/administrative experience as Program Director or Associate Program Director is also required.

    Qualified candidates will have excellent communication skills, active involvement in research and scholarship (publications, presentations, etc.), and mentorship experience of residents and students in scholarship and development of scholarship programs. Inpatient and administrative experience is preferred.

The exact starting compensation to be offered will be determined at the time of selecting an applicant for hire, in which a wide range of factors will be considered, including but not limited to, skillset, years of applicable experience, education, credentials and licensure.
