This position is ideal for an individual who excels at mentoring young, incoming student-athletes, fostering a positive and inclusive team culture, and collaborating closely with our Varsity program to build a seamless, competitive pipeline.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Coaching and Player Development

  • Practice Management: Lead the planning, execution, and supervision of daily practices, skill development drills, and game-day preparation for the Frosh/Soph team.

  • Skill Instruction: Design and implement instructional sessions focused on volleyball fundamentals (serving, passing, setting, hitting, and blocking) and team strategies aligned with the Varsity program's system.

  • Feedback & Mentorship: Provide positive, constructive, and individualized feedback to players to enhance performance, volleyball IQ, and overall understanding of the game.

  • Team Presence: Be consistently present and actively engaged at all scheduled practices, games, team meetings, and related program events.

Program Management and Logistics

  • Equipment & Uniforms: Manage the inventory, issuance, and collection of the Frosh/Soph team's equipment and uniforms at the beginning and end of the season.

  • Travel Supervision: Ride the team bus for away games, providing supervision and mentorship during transit.

  • Compliance & Safety: Adhere to all policies set forth by the school, league, and the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF). Successfully complete all mandated coaching education and certification requirements (e.g., CPR/First Aid, Sudden Cardiac Arrest, Concussion Protocol, Mandated Reporter).

  • Department Engagement: Participate actively in all required athletic department meetings and end-of-season recognition events.

Culture and Communication

  • Culture Building: Coordinate and implement activities designed to build strong team camaraderie, sportsmanship, and positive team dynamics.

  • Communication: Maintain necessary, clear, and timely communication with the Varsity Head Coach, Athletic Department, student-athletes, and parents.

  • Professionalism: Represent the program and school with professionalism, integrity, and respect on and off the court.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Experience: Previous high school, club, or collegiate-level playing or coaching experience in volleyball is required.

  • Education: Undergraduate Degree is strongly preferred.

  • Leadership & Interpersonal Skills: Highly organized, reliable, punctual, and capable of independently managing a team practice and game schedule. Must possess a positive, patient, and enthusiastic demeanor suitable for developing younger high school athletes.

  • Sport Knowledge: Comprehensive knowledge of volleyball fundamentals, tactical rotations (e.g., 5-1, 6-2), strategies, and current CIF/NFHS rules.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

Work is primarily performed indoors (gymnasium), involving exposure to moderate-to-loud noise levels during practices and matches, and various weather conditions during travel.

Essential Physical Tasks

  • Ability to stand, walk, and be active on one's feet for extended periods (multiple hours) during practices and games.

  • Capability to actively demonstrate volleyball skills and drills, which requires bending, reaching, light jumping, and lifting moderate objects (e.g., ball carts, net equipment, water coolers).
