Classification: Temporary, Non-Exempt, Staff / Adjunct Faculty

Reports To: Dean of Student Activities

Pay Range: $60/hr-$125/hr

Schedule: Part-time, temporary. Hours vary based on the course offering schedule, but will range from a total of 6 hours to 12 hours per term. All course planning, instruction, essential record-keeping, and communication are compensable working time and must be accurately logged.

Location: On-campus / In-person (San Francisco, CA)

U-Period instructors lead non-credit elective courses for groups of up to 20 high school students. Instructors plan and facilitate engaging activities or lessons that encourage students to explore new skills and interests without the expectation of formal grading or assessment. Candidates must demonstrate enthusiasm, relevant subject-matter expertise, and the ability to foster a positive, student-centered classroom culture.

Responsibilities

  • Instruction & Curriculum Facilitation: Plan and deliver engaging, inclusive activities tailored to a diverse student body across mixed grade levels, gender identities, and experience levels.

  • Classroom Management: Maintain an active, supportive, and structured environment aligned with U-Period goals—providing meaningful learning opportunities without assigning homework or formal grades.

  • Communication & Record-Keeping: Regularly communicate with the Dean of Student Activities regarding instructional supply needs, student support concerns, and administrative requirements (including accurate daily attendance logging and emergency readiness).

  • Expense Management: Track and submit receipts for pre-approved class supplies in accordance with school policy and expense reimbursement standards.

  • Safety & Supervision: Maintain visual supervision and responsibility for student safety during all scheduled class times and activities, following school safety protocols.

  • Timekeeping: Accurately log all hours worked (including classroom instruction, setup, cleanup, and prep time) in the school's timekeeping system.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree OR at least 2 years of professional/practical experience in the relevant field or activity.

  • Demonstrated experience teaching, mentoring, or working with high school-aged youth.

  • Strong alignment with the goals of the U-Period program and a commitment to the core values and mission of Urban School.

  • Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.

  • Must reside in and be legally authorized to work in California.

  • Work Environment: Typical climate-controlled classroom or workshop setting. Select outdoor activity courses may involve outdoor environments under variable local weather conditions.

  • Equipment Used: Computer, projector, audio/visual technology, and specialized course-specific tools or equipment.

  • Expense Reimbursement (CA Labor Code § 2802): Urban provides or fully reimburses all required teaching materials, supplies, and tools necessary to conduct the U-Period course.

  • Ability to remain active in a classroom or instructional setting for the duration of the class period (~1 to 2 hours per shift).

  • Ability to stand, sit, move around the classroom, and interact dynamically with students.

  • Ability to operate classroom technology and lift/move standard classroom supplies (up to 20 lbs).

  • Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform essential job functions.

  • Background Check: Satisfactory completion of a Live Scan fingerprint background check in accordance with California Education Code requirements.

  • Mandated Reporter: Completion of mandatory Child Abuse Mandated Reporter training (AB 1432) prior to commencing work.

  • Health Clearances: Valid TB (Tuberculosis) risk assessment/clearance as required by California law for school staff.
