2026-27 AY Assistant Professor Tenure Track Position – Special Education & Counseling (2)

The Special Education & Counseling Department in the College of Education at Cal State LA, is seeking to fill two full-time, academic year Assistant Professor tenure track positions in the School-Based Family Counseling Program, with appointment beginning Spring 2027 or Fall 2027.

1) Doctorate in Counseling, Psychology, Education, or closely related field from an accredited institution of higher education.

2) Demonstrated ability and/or experience in working in a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural environment, including public schools.

3) Demonstrated potential or record of effective teaching using a variety of methodologies. Demonstrated ability in providing supervision of counselors in clinical settings such as public schools or agencies. 

4) Proficiency in oral and written communication skills.

5) Evidence of publications in scholarly journals or planned agenda for research, scholarship, or creative activities.

1) Advanced training and experience in conjoint family therapy and is a Licensed Psychologist, LMFT, LCSW and/or LPCC.

2) Professional identity as a family counselor, affiliation with professional organization in marriage family therapy.

3) Holds a valid California Pupil Personnel Services Credential in School Counseling and Advanced Authorization in Child Welfare and Attendance.

4) Demonstrated ability in providing supervision of first-year graduate students in conjoint family therapy in a community clinic setting.

5) Ability to teach in three or more of the following areas: Family Counseling Laboratory, Basic Counseling & Interviewing Skills; Individual Counseling Strategies; Group Counseling; Multicultural Counseling, Leadership in Pupil Personnel Services, Family Counseling with Children; Human Sexuality; Human Development.

6) Willingness to teach 18 Saturday mornings per academic year (the clinic provides training to students and services to families on Saturdays).

Principal duties include teaching introductory and advanced courses in Counseling, including providing supervision of first-year graduate students in conjoint family therapy in a community clinic setting, supervising practicum/fieldwork, and providing student advisement.

Initial salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience (anticipated hiring range: $91,000 - $97,224 annually.

The Department of Special Education and Counseling at California State University, Los Angeles offers programs of study leading to a variety of undergraduate/graduate degrees, credentials, and certificates/added authorizations. Preparation is offered for teachers, counselors, school psychologists, and specialists in special education, counseling, rehabilitation, and related services. A doctoral program in Special Education is offered jointly with UCLA for those seeking preparation to teach at the university level and to serve in other leadership roles. In addition to on-campus preparation programs, several special education, school counseling, and school psychology internship programs are available through cooperative programs jointly implemented by many school districts and the department.

The School-Based Family Counseling Program is designed to prepare students with the clinical skills of an independent marriage and family therapist and the wide range of competencies of an effective school counselor. Students learn to work with adults, families and children from a variety of systems-oriented perspectives in a number of environments. With a strong foundation in clinical practice and community engagement, students are equipped to pursue multiple professional credentials—including the Pupil Personnel Services (PPS) credential, Advanced Authorization in Child Welfare and Attendance (CWA), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) license, and Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) license. Graduates are prepared to serve in a variety of school and mental health settings where they can make a lasting impact.

The program provides the opportunity for students to work in the Cal State LA’s School-Based Family Counseling Clinic with families from the community who are referred for family and school-related challenges. Students work in co-therapy teams under the direct supervision of licensed faculty members. This is a unique approach to preparation in the field, and the program is highly regarded and sought for admission, as it provides students with one-of-a-kind training that supports student and family wellness and success.

The certification must translate the information in English, and confirm that your highest terminal degree is US Equivalent to a US terminal degree (i.e., Masters, Doctorate, Doctorate of Philosophy).
