Role Summary

Lead and recommend solutions to network and security issues, as well as provide network-engineering solutions and options for the organisation to ensure that all users and systems can communicate effectively and access necessary resources without disruptions. They also direct and coordinate Wide Area Computer Network activities to ensure networks operate efficiently and meet business requirements of the Government.

Role Responsibilities

  1. Facilitate the smooth and efficient operations of the division and supervision of assigned staff. 
  2. Develop, administer and maintain systems, records and reports to ensure the Department meets its objectives. 
  3. Prepare relevant reports on the unit’s activities. 
  4. Complete a minimum of 60 Essential Learning Hours annually to enhance professional knowledge and skills in subject area. 
  5. Perform additional duties that are reasonable, job-related, and within the scope of this position, supporting the objectives and effectiveness of the Department, as assigned by the Supervisor or senior officer.
  6. Assist in staffing, training, and developing technical support personnel to ensure the team possesses the knowledge and technical skills required to support project and departmental requirements.
  7. Develop network specifications and recommend strategies for network growth, security, enhancement, and optimization, maximizing the functionality of network equipment to support efficient and reliable operations.
  8. Perform routine and emergency maintenance of Data Centre and network equipment, diagnose and correct faults, and resolve complex technical issues escalated from the Help Desk to minimize service disruption and downtime. 
  9. Analyse and evaluate LAN changes, additions, and reconfigurations to ensure efficient network operation, and research and evaluate relevant LAN and wireless technologies for potential implementation. 
  10. Install, configure, and maintain PC and server hardware and software, administer Wireless Access Points as extensions of the LAN, and troubleshoot connectivity issues to maintain network availability. 
  11. Assist in the design, implementation, and administration of WAN infrastructure and equipment, including wireless WAN solutions, to support departmental and Government-wide network requirements and expansion. 
  12. Design, install, and test network topologies supporting Internet connectivity and other data transport channels, and implement content filtering and related controls in accordance with established policies. 
  13. Develop and maintain network operations processes and procedures, including the administration of network backup and recovery plans and the implementation of appropriate security measures to maintain network integrity and business continuity. 
  14. Administer network monitoring tools and conduct regular inspections of network equipment and infrastructure at all locations to identify potential issues, maintain network performance, and minimize downtime. 
  15. Test and update radio firmware periodically, manage bandwidth allocation, and provide training to staff on new radio firmware features and upgrades to maintain effective and reliable communications. 
  16. Administer and maintain server configurations according to specified roles and requirements, ensuring servers are properly prepared and configured for deployment.

Minimum Qualification and Experience: 

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Engineering, Information Technology or related area 
  • Four (4) years’ working experience in a related area

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Sound knowledge of Government structure, policies and procedures 
  • Excellent knowledge of information systems, methods and techniques used in systems operations, as well as other current technology 
  • Excellent knowledge of relevant computer software applications 
  • Sound knowledge of the use of standard office equipment 
  • Sound interpersonal and organisational skills 
  • Sound analytical and decision-making skills Sound oral and written communication skills 
  • Ability to work well under pressure
