GreenCo mobilises private sector capital by enabling bankable structures, accelerating procurement and contracting, and supporting delivery of transformative energy capacity addition.
GreenCo’s vision is to lead innovation and sustainably transform renewable energy markets through:
- Market integration and scalable commercial structures that unlock investment in renewable generation.
- Innovative, financeable solutions that increase speed-to-market for new projects and customer supply.
- An agile, high-ownership culture with strong accountability and measurable delivery.
GreenCo offers a dynamic environment with strong potential for professional development and career advancement.
The Role in Context
The BESS Senior Project Manager will be responsible for executing GreenCo’s entire BESS programme, including:
- Leading the internal development and delivery of GreenCo’s first BESS Pilot Project, from feasibility, regulatory engagement, engineering oversight, procurement, contracting, and financing support, through to commissioning and operational readiness.
- Managing GreenCo’s approach to contracting BESS assets into our portfolio, including BOO/EPC structures, third-party developer partnerships, and capacity-as-a-service (tolling) structures.
- Developing and delivering GreenCo’s behind-the-meter (BTM) BESS offering, that will allow GreenCo to build a scalable product line integrated into our renewable supply, grid-support, and power-quality improvement services.
This is a cross-functional, technically-grounded, and market-shaping role with significant strategic and execution responsibility.
Key Responsibilities
Internal BESS Project Delivery
- Lead the end-to-end project management of GreenCo’s internal utility-scale BESS Pilot Project.
- Coordinate feasibility outcomes, engineering studies, siting decisions, environmental and social assessments, and technical parameter finalisation.
- Oversee procurement strategy, EPC/vendor evaluation, BOO/EPC model selection, and technical/commercial negotiations.
- Work closely with regulatory bodies (ERB, MoE, ZESCO), ensuring alignment with emerging BESS regulations, licensing requirements, grid standards, and market participation rules.
- Manage budget, timelines, risk register, and stakeholder communications.
- Deliver a fully contracted, bankable, build-ready, and ultimately operational BESS asset that integrates optimally into GreenCo’s trading operations.
BESS Contracting & Portfolio Integration
- Develop GreenCo’s framework for contracting BESS capacity and storage services from third-party providers.
- Structure appropriate commercial models for sourcing BESS capacity: EPC, BOO, JV, lease/annuity, and hybrid structures.
- Evaluate and negotiate with BESS developers, suppliers, EPC contractors, and financiers.
- Build a multi-site storage portfolio model aligned with GreenCo’s broader renewable growth and SAPP market strategy.
- Support integration of BESS dispatch into GreenCo’s trading and customer supply commitments.
Behind-the-Meter (BTM) BESS Product Development
- Develop a scalable BTM BESS product informed by ongoing work with commercial and industrial (C&I) customers.
- Lead technical and commercial solution design: integrating BESS with onsite PV, power-quality solutions, voltage-ride-through capabilities, and resilience requirements.
- Translate pilot proposals into a standardised offering suitable for rolling out across the region.
- Work with GreenCo cross-functional teams to structure appropriate BTM PPAs, service agreements, and energy-management contracts.
- Ensure solutions are technically robust, cost-effective, customer-centric, and aligned with GreenCo’s energy-service strategy.
Qualifications & Experience

- 8+ years of experience in energy project development, EPC/IPP development, grid engineering, or large-scale storage projects.
- Proven track record managing complex, multi-stakeholder technical projects, including BESS, PV-plus-storage, or grid-support infrastructure.
- Expertise in technical and commercial evaluation of BESS technologies, EPC proposals, and operational strategies.
- A good understanding of SAPP markets, energy trading, RE integration challenges, and grid operations is highly desirable.
- Experience engaging with regulators, utilities, and international development partners.
Skills & Attributes
- Strong project management discipline with the ability to execute under uncertainty.
- Technical depth in power systems, storage technologies, and grid integration.
- Commercial and financial acumen for structuring storage-related contracts and business models.
