Under the overall supervision of the Senior Project Associate_Communications, the Senior Project Assistant_Communications will provide support to the Media and Communications Unit. The candidate will contribute to the implementation of creative communication strategies and robustly position the organization as the leader in protecting and assisting migrants. 

  1. Help design and implement IOM’s Brazil communications strategy; 

  2. Support the planning and implementation of communication strategies and campaigns, ensuring alignment with institutional priorities and donor visibility requirements;

  3. Produce press releases, articles, stories, newsletters, key messages, talking points, and other written communication materials highlighting IOM activities and results; 

  4. Support crisis communication efforts, including rapid content development and clearance processes, as required;

  5. Manage IOM Brazil social media in line with guidance provided by the supervisor;

  6. Monitor media coverage and social media performance, and contribute to the preparation de reports and analytics (e.g., media clippings, engagement metrics);

  7. Ensure timely dissemination of promotional and communications materials, such as newsletters and press releases, on the IOM website, as well as other media channels; 

  8. Support translating and reviewing stories, booklets, newsletters and other materials; 

  9. Assist in the coverage of online and in-person conferences, meetings, workshops, seminars and other events; 

  10. Provide administrative and logistical support to the Communications Unit, as required

  11. Performs any other duties as may be needed.

Requirements

  • University degree in Communications / Journalism, or any related field with at least 4 years of relevant experience or Highschool diploma with at least 6 years of relevant experience.

Accredited Universities are those listed in the UNESCO World Higher Education Database.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), Canva, and MailChimp.
  • Experience working within a team of colleagues from diverse cultures and professional backgrounds.
  • Experience in media monitoring, research, and fact-checking related to current affairs or thematic areas such as migration, humanitarian action, or development; 
  • Experience in organizing or supporting communication coverage of events, including online and in-person activities;
  • Previous experience in a Communications unit at an international organization is an advantage
  • Experience in emergency or crisis communication contexts is an asset.

     

  • Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills, with attention to detail and ability to adapt tone to different audiences and platforms; 
  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet tight deadlines; 
  • Good knowledge of social media management tools and content planning, including basic analytics and performance tracking; 
  • Ability to synthesize complex information into clear, accessible communication products; 
  • Strong research and analytical skills, including fact-checking and content validation; 
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse teams and stakeholders; 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint); familiarity with design and content tools (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, MailChimp) is an advantage; 
  • Knowledge of media landscape and communication trends in Brazil is desirable;

     

All IOM staff members in all categories are required to be fluent in one of the IOM's official languages (English, French, Spanish).

For this position, fluency in Portuguese is required (oral and written). Working knowledge of English and Spanish are desirable.

Proficiency of language(s) required will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.
