As a Financial Controller, you’ll own the day-to-day accounting function within a lean, high-growth, remote-first environment.
You’ll lead the monthly, quarterly, and year-end close while ensuring accurate reporting, strong controls, and sound accounting practices.
The role combines hands-on accounting leadership with commercial insight across project revenue, margins, cash flow, and business performance.
You’ll partner closely with finance and business leaders to turn financial data into clear recommendations and actionable decisions.
A key part of the opportunity is improving finance operations through automation, AI, better data flows, and scalable processes.
You’ll have substantial autonomy to challenge assumptions, solve problems, and strengthen the financial infrastructure supporting continued growth.

Own monthly, quarterly, and year-end close activities across multiple entities, including journal entries, reconciliations, consolidations, and supporting schedules.
Prepare accurate financial statements, management reporting, variance analysis, accounting policies, and audit-ready working papers.
Manage accounting for time-and-materials, fixed-fee, and retainer engagements, including work in progress, unbilled revenue, deferred revenue, and revenue recognition.
Partner with delivery leaders on project reviews covering revenue, costs, margins, utilization, labour economics, budget overruns, change orders, and billing gaps.
Review client contracts and statements of work to assess revenue recognition, billing terms, and collectability considerations.
Support forecasting, scenario analysis, pricing decisions, and other initiatives connecting financial performance with business strategy.
Oversee cash management, banking, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, invoicing, and collections processes.
Lead annual audits and serve as the primary contact for auditors, tax advisors, banks, and other external finance partners.
Coordinate Canadian tax and compliance activities, including GST/HST, year-end filings, applicable SR&ED support, and cross-border or multi-entity requirements.
Maintain practical financial controls and scalable processes suited to a growing remote organization.
Evaluate and improve the finance technology stack, prioritizing automation and workflow improvements with measurable operational impact.
Automate reconciliations, close activities, reporting, and recurring workflows where appropriate, while using AI responsibly to improve efficiency, documentation, and decision-making.
Build reliable data flows between finance, delivery, sales, and people systems.
Partner with the CFO and Finance Manager to strengthen the finance operating model and support the organization's next stage of growth.
Translate financial results into clear recommendations, challenge assumptions constructively, and follow issues through to resolution.

Requirements

CPA designation with at least 7 years of progressive accounting and finance experience.
Previous experience owning financial close and reporting as a Controller, Assistant Controller, Senior Accounting Manager, or in an equivalent role.
Hands-on experience working within a lean finance team, ideally in a startup, scale-up, technology, consulting, or professional services environment.
Strong technical accounting judgment, with experience across audits, tax, controls, and multi-entity reporting.
Experience with project- or contract-based revenue, including time-and-materials, fixed-fee, or retainer engagements.
Strong understanding of how delivery decisions influence revenue recognition, margins, cash flow, and overall business performance.
Excellent analytical skills, with the ability to move from detailed financial information to clear business recommendations.
Strong spreadsheet capabilities and experience with Xero or a comparable cloud accounting platform.
Demonstrated ability to improve finance systems, close processes, reporting, data quality, or financial workflows.
Practical experience using automation or AI to make finance operations faster, more reliable, and more valuable.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain accounting concepts to non-finance stakeholders.
High ownership, sound judgment, and confidence challenging senior stakeholders constructively.
Comfortable working independently in a remote-first environment where processes may still be evolving and not every answer is documented.
Experience with Canadian businesses operating across the United States is an asset.
Experience implementing or optimizing ERP, close management, reporting, or finance workflow platforms is an asset.
Experience supporting financing, acquisitions, due diligence, or investor reporting is an asset.
