The Standardized Patient reports directly to the Director of Simulation and the Standardized Patient Coordinator. The major responsibility of this position is to accurately portray the specific emotions, behaviors and disease symptoms as a real patient, while interacting with students and learners in simulated patient encounters. Standardized patients may also be examined by medical students and faculty as part of the formative and summative learning experience.
Incumbents in this role supports the Simulation Center with their ability to act as patients to enhance the education and growth in skills of medical students, residents, and other health care providers.
- Memorizes a case script detailing specific emotions, behaviors, and disease signs/symptoms for presentation during simulated learning situations.
- Simulates all aspects of medical scenarios, including history of current problem.
- Presents case information in a standardized manner, as elicited by students during simulated interactive patient history and/or medical examinations.
- Remains in a specific character as trained when responding to student questions.
- Recalls actions and dialogue that may have occurred during an interaction with the learner.
- Provides educationally constructive verbal feedback within a structured format, as appropriate to the position.

- High School Diploma or GED.
- Acting experience is preferred, but not required.
Knowledge of:
- General knowledge of anatomy helpful, but not required
Ability to:
- Accurately and convincingly maintain a specified character as trained.
- Memorize a script using strong memory recall
- Work flexible hours and a scheduled on-call basis.
- Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Recall case information, as cued by students in the simulated situation.
- Understand and follow directions and incorporate trainer feedback.
- Recall and accurately score student behaviors.
- Maintain confidentiality of case and student information.
Dependent upon assignment, applicants may be required to pass an extensive background investigation, and be fingerprinted. Disqualification for felony, misdemeanor, and traffic offenses will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
All Kern Medical employees are designated “Disaster Service Workers” through state and local laws (CA Government Code Sec. 3100-3109 and Ordinance Code Title 2 - Administration, Ch. 2.66 Emergency Services.) As Disaster Service Workers, all county employees are expected to remain at work, or to report for work as soon as practicable following a significant emergency or disaster.
If position responsibilities require driving a personal vehicle, then possession of a current valid California Driver’s License and adherence to the Kern County Hospital Authority Vehicle Use and Driving Standard Policy (ENG-EC-119) is required.
If position responsibilities require driving a vehicle owned, leased or rented by Kern Medical, then possession of a current valid California Driver’s license, a signed authorization for Release of Drivers Record Information and adherence to the Kern County Hospital Authority Vehicle Use and Driving Standard Policy (ENG-EC-119) is required.
