The Hub - Student Life Representatives

The McMaster Students Union (MSU) is the largest group on campus representing approximately 27,000 undergraduate students at McMaster University. All students enrolled in 18 (or more units) are members of the MSU. The MSU serves students in two main areas; political representation and the enhancement of student life. The MSU operates more than two dozen different services to serve the needs of students. As well, the MSU is the front line of student advocacy. The MSU advocates for student interests at the university, municipal, provincial and federal levels of government.

The Hub Student Life Representatives (SLR) will act as the first point of contact for inquiries regarding the Hub and act as a liaison between the MSU and McMaster community. This includes providing information to students and other patrons regarding the Hub’s policies and day-to-day operations, bookable spaces, available rentals, amenities, etc. The Hub SLRs also play a role in ensuring the upkeep of the Hub by supporting the set-up and take-down of booked spaces, as well as ensuring all furniture is in its designated spot on a daily basis. The Hub SLRs provide support to the operations of the Hub.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Interpersonal skills required to effectively interact with individuals. 

• Resourcefulness is required to provide accurate information about the MSU and the Hub. 

• Strong organizational skills are required, as multiple tasks and activities will be required to be completed simultaneously. 

• Conflict mediation skills are an asset, to help deescalate emotionally charged situations as required. 

• Ability to prioritize to ensure all deadlines are met and tasks are being completed effectively. 

• Strong verbal and written communication skills are required.  

Effort & Responsibility

• Effort required to stay up to date with events and information in the MSU and the Hub. 

• Responsible for ordering and restocking supplies for the Hub as required. 

• Responsible for helping to manage spaces in the Hub. 

• Responsible for ensuring accurate and detailed documentation is maintained. 

Working Conditions

• Work is performed in the Hub, and interruptions are frequent. 

• Hours may be spent sitting and staring at a computer which may cause strain if not monitored. 

• Regular lifting and moving of furniture up to approx 50lbs in the Hub will be required. 

Training and Experience

• Customer service experience is considered an asset. 

• Additional training will be provided to successful candidates. 

• Experience using Office 365 is considered an asset.

Hours: Variable - Monday - Sunday

Remuneration: A - $18.10 per hour (inclusive of the Oct 1 min wage increase)
