About the team and what we do
Our investigation team handles Fitness to Practise cases. If a concern passes the initial screening, this team gathers evidence like medical records, CCTV, and statements. They then send a report to case examiners who decide if there is a case to answer.
Your role and impact
We have exciting opportunities for Investigators to join our Professional Regulation directorate and play a vital role in protecting the public and upholding confidence in the nursing and midwifery professions.
This is a challenging, rewarding and meaningful role where no two days are the same. As an Investigator, you will manage and progress complex fitness to practise investigations concerning nurses and midwives, balancing fairness, compassion and public protection.
You will gather, analyse and assess evidence to determine whether a nurse or midwife is safe to practise and whether there are risks that need to be addressed. This will involve engaging with a wide range of stakeholders, including nurses, midwives, patients, families, witnesses and representatives, often during difficult and emotionally sensitive circumstances.
The role requires resilience, sound judgement and the ability to navigate challenging and sensitive situations professionally. You will regularly work with complex, high-risk and sometimes distressing information, making thoughtful, evidence-based decisions while ensuring people are treated with empathy and respect throughout the process.
You will work closely with colleagues and specialist professionals to ensure investigations are progressed effectively and risks are identified and managed appropriately.
You will be an excellent communicator, able to build trust and adapt your style to a range of audiences, including people who may be vulnerable, distressed or experiencing challenging circumstances.
You will be comfortable managing complexity, balancing competing priorities and making evidence-based decisions in a fast-paced environment. Above all, you will be resilient, empathetic and committed to delivering a fair, person-centred service that supports the NMC in fulfilling its statutory duty to protect the public.
