The Charge Nurse provides professional nursing leadership during the assigned shift and supports the daily operations of the Medical/Surgical and Emergency Departments. This role is responsible for coordinating staffing, patient assignments, and departmental workflow while serving as a clinical resource to the nursing team. The Charge Nurse collaborates with management and administration to ensure safe, efficient, and patient-centered care and may provide direct patient care as needed.
Responsibilities
~2 min read- →Provides leadership and guidance to nursing staff during assigned shifts.
- →Coordinates daily patient assignments, triage nurse assignments, and staff break coverage.
- →Reviews admission orders and assigns appropriate patient rooms and nursing staff.
- →Monitors patient acuity and adjusts staffing levels as needed during the current shift and for upcoming shifts.
- →Assists with chart reviews and supports nursing staff in completing documentation requirements.
- →Participates in utilization review activities and discharge planning processes.
- →Ensures quality assurance checks are completed and documented appropriately.
- →Maintains accountability for departmental keys, pharmacy access, and required documentation.
- →Verifies completion of patient charges at the end of each shift.
- →Floats between departments as needed to support patient care and operational needs.
- →Provides clinical backup for nursing staff, including triage responsibilities when necessary.
- →Performs patient assessment and triage according to established standards and protocols.
- →Demonstrates knowledge of inpatient, outpatient, observation, and emergency department processes and documentation.
- →Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates individualized patient care across all age groups.
- →Maintains accountability for nursing care delivered during the shift.
- →Protects patient privacy and confidentiality in all interactions.
- →Serves as a patient advocate by communicating patient needs and coordinating care among the healthcare team.
- →Communicates significant patient condition changes, interventions, and outcomes both verbally and in writing.
- →Provides patient and family education, including discharge instructions that are clear and understandable.
- →Supports and participates in quality improvement, safety, infection prevention, and environmental programs.
- →Responds to emergency codes according to hospital policy.
- →Attends required meetings, trainings, and educational programs.
- →Assists with orientation and preceptorship of new employees and nursing graduates.
- →Demonstrates professional, ethical, and legal nursing practice.
- →Completes all assigned training and education requirements on time.
- →Contributes to a culture of Patient-Centered Care.
- →Contributes to a safe work environment.
- →Demonstrates commitment to the team and serves as a mentor to co-workers.
- →Maintains practices of financial stewardship.
- →Maintains regular and punctual attendance.
- →Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
~1 min read- Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing.
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in good standing in the State of Washington.
- Current Healthcare Provider CPR certification required.
- Current ACLS certification required.
- TEAM or TNCC certification required.
- PALS certification preferred.
- Previous Charge Nurse experience preferred.
- Strong nursing assessment and clinical decision-making skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Ability to remain flexible and perform effectively in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to provide, receive, and apply constructive feedback professionally.
