The SVP, Retrocession Reinsurance Broker is responsible for the design, placement, negotiation, and ongoing management of complex retrocession programs for global reinsurance clients. The role requires extensive knowledge of property catastrophe and specialty reinsurance markets, advanced analytical capabilities, and well-established relationships with international reinsurers and retrocession markets. It also demands a highly specialized technical skill set, including advanced retrocession structuring expertise, which is critical to the Company’s ability to effectively compete in this niche segment.
The role is based in Bermuda and plays a key part in supporting and expanding the Company’s reinsurance broking capabilities within the Bermuda market and globally.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Structure and place sophisticated retrocession programs, including quota share, excess of loss, aggregate, and catastrophe protections for reinsurance company clients.
- Analyze client portfolios, catastrophe exposures, capital requirements, and risk transfer objectives to develop tailored retrocession strategies.
- Provide strategic advice to senior executives regarding risk transfer alternatives, capital optimization, and portfolio management.
- Significant experience in reinsurance or retrocession brokerage, underwriting, or reinsurance capital markets.
- Interpret catastrophe model outputs and exposure analytics to assess placement requirements and market appetite.
- Coordinate with actuaries, catastrophe modelers, underwriters, claims specialists, and legal teams to develop and execute placement strategies.
- Prepare market presentations, underwriting submissions, and technical analyses for reinsurers and investors.
- Monitor retrocession market conditions, pricing trends, capacity changes, and emerging risks affecting client programs.
- Support the placement of industry loss warranties (ILWs), collateralized reinsurance transactions, sidecars, and other alternative capital solutions where applicable.
- Review and negotiate contract terms, endorsements, and documentation to ensure alignment with client objectives and regulatory requirements.
- Maintain and develop relationships with senior decision-makers across global reinsurance and retrocession markets.
- Mentor junior brokers and contribute to technical training and market development initiatives.
- Work with account management support and the Contracts department to ensure accurate treaty contracts and program placements
- Work with account management support and internal Claims, Operations, and Finance departments to ensure the administration of accounts is going smoothly, and help resolve issues that require broker assistance
- Adhere to Company compliance and departmental procedures, including file management and documentation, as well as placement process
- Establish performance expectations of accounts and monitor results
- Responsible for operating effectively across functional boundaries, as well as building and sustaining external and internal relationships
- Responsible for mentoring and coaching members of their assigned broking teams (i.e. Broker Analysts)
KEY REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor’s or higher degree in a discipline requiring strong analytical, verbal reasoning, and critical thinking skills
- ACII or equivalent qualification
- At least 10 years’ experience in a similar role with a minimum of 5 years trading retrocessional deals.
- Demonstrated expertise in catastrophe reinsurance structures, treaty wordings, and retrocession placement processes. A strong understanding of reinsurance transactions is preferred
- Strong understanding of catastrophe modeling platforms, exposure management tools, and reinsurance analytics.
- Strong preference for candidates with in-depth experience reading and interpreting reinsurance contract language.
- Highly analytical with strong attention to detail and a strong appreciation and understanding of current issues affecting the industry
- Dedicated and collaborative team player with the ability to operate effectively across all levels of the organization
- Strong communication skills - verbal, written and presentation, along with strong Excel, Word, and PowerPoint skills
- Adept at developing new relationships, and expert at maintaining regular contact with clients, prospects, and the reinsurance marketplace
