📦 About the Role:

The Packing Operator (Operations Lead) plays a vital leadership role in the success of our packhouse. Reporting to the Packing Manager, this position combines hands-on production oversight with strategic operations management.

You will supervise packing crews, ensure product flows smoothly across multiple packing lines, maintain rigorous food safety standards, and drive performance using Lean manufacturing principles. You’ll be responsible for labor optimization, production data tracking, equipment readiness, and continuously improving process flow to reduce waste and maximize output.

🔧 Key Responsibilities: Operations & Product Flow Management

• Oversee the day-to-day activities of the greenhouse packhouse and multiple packing lines
• Coordinate product movement from receiving through to final packaging, ensuring smooth flow, minimal bottlenecks, and proper handling
• Balance labor and machine capacity to meet daily targets across all product SKUs
• Collaborate with production and logistics teams to maintain consistent supply to the packing lines

Leadership & Labor Management

• Supervise, schedule, and support packing staff daily
• Coach and lead teams to meet quality and productivity expectations
• Train employees on safe and efficient packing procedures and equipment usage
• Promote a positive, accountable, and safety-focused work culture

Lean Manufacturing & Performance Optimization

• Apply Lean manufacturing principles to reduce waste and improve packhouse efficiency
• Analyze production metrics including CPMH (Cases Per Man Hour), cost-per-case, and line efficiency
• Conduct root-cause analysis and implement corrective actions for process issues
• Lead small-scale continuous improvement projects within the packhouse

Compliance & Data Tracking

• Ensure all food safety policies and documentation are followed and audit-ready
• Conduct daily pre-op inspections, sanitation checks, and equipment readiness tasks
• Maintain accurate and timely production and labor reports, including data entry and reconciliation
• Track packing volumes and report any variances or issues to the Packing Manager

Other Duties

• Participate in equipment preventative maintenance
• Collaborate with other departments including maintenance, growing, and logistics
• Perform additional tasks as required by leadership

🧠 Core Skills & Attributes:

• Strong leadership and people management abilities
• Familiarity with Lean tools (5S, root-cause, visual management, waste reduction)
• Analytical thinking and ability to interpret production and labor data
• Excellent organizational and time management skills
• Effective communication in English (Spanish and Punjabi are strong assets)
• Ability to remain calm, focused, and adaptable in fast-paced, high-volume environments

📚 Experience & Qualifications:

• 3+ years of experience in operations or labor management in a fresh produce or manufacturing environment
• 2+ years of experience with greenhouse packing lines or vegetable grading equipment
• Experience with packhouse production flow planning and labor allocation
• Knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Outlook, and data management tools
• Lean Six Sigma training or hands-on experience in continuous improvement preferred
• Forklift experience and valid certification is an asset
• Must have reliable transportation to and from work
