Laboratory Analyst - GC/MS & GC/MSMS

A leading international science-based service provider is looking for a technically skilled Laboratory Analyst to join their team in Somerset West, Cape Town. The role focuses on the precise analysis of samples using advanced gas chromatography techniques. The successful candidate will manage the full analytical lifecycle, from initial chemical extractions of raw materials to the preparation of complex standards. Operating within a highly regulated framework, the Analyst ensures all work aligns with strict quality guidelines and customer service agreements. Working hours for this position are determined by operational needs to ensure the laboratory consistently meets critical turnaround times for its client base. Key Responsibilities Perform high-precision sample analysis utilizing validated GC/MS and GC/MSMS methodologies. Manage chemical extractions from raw materials and accurately prepare required solutions and standards. Lead the development, validation, and implementation of innovative analytical methods tailored to specific client needs. Technical troubleshooting of laboratory equipment and the rigorous maintenance of instrument procedures. Compose detailed work instructions and perform literature research to support new analytical techniques. Deliver accurate results within established timeframes while maintaining impeccable digital and physical audit trails. Monitor the inventory of certified reference standards and oversee general laboratory stock levels. Maintain strict compliance with ISO 17025 standards, health and safety protocols, and general laboratory housekeeping. Support the broader team with sample reception and preparation duties when required. Requirements Bachelor’s Degree in Analytical Chemistry or an equivalent qualification. 2–3 years of professional experience within a commercial or research laboratory. Demonstrated practical expertise in GC/MSMS techniques. High level of computer literacy, specifically with Advanced Microsoft Excel and Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS). A professional, diligent approach to technical laboratory operations. Preferred Qualifications Postgraduate degree (B.Sc Hons or B.Tech). Practical working knowledge of ISO 17025 accreditation standards. Advanced expertise in both Gas Chromatography (GC) and Liquid Chromatography (LC). Prior experience working within a pesticide testing laboratory environment.
