Position Overview
The Student Union, Inc. is 501(c)(3) nonprofit auxiliary that maintains three major facilities at San José State University in downtown San José, California. These facilities include the Diaz Compean Student Union Building, the Provident Credit Union Event Center, and the Spartan Recreation and Aquatic Center. The Student Union, Inc. functions as part of the Student Affairs Division on campus, and is governed by a Board of Directors made up of a student majority, faculty, and administrators.

Job Summary
Under the general supervision of the Facilities Manager, the Facilities Maintenance Technician II performs general maintenance in the Student Union, Event Center and Recreation Center facilities. The purpose of this position is to provide quality, courteous, and timely facilities maintenance services to all internal and external customers; to produce quality work at or above the industry standard; to perform skilled and semiskilled work in any of several trades such as carpentry, painting, plaster and building maintenance; and to provide safe, secure, and sanitary spaces for all who use Student Union Inc. facilities.

Decision Making / Guidelines
Independent evaluation of maintenance and repair requirements, materials, tools and equipment need. Determination of method of accomplishment and prioritization of work effort. Determination of the safest and most efficient/effective manner of accomplishing each task. Who and what may be affected by shut down for repairs, who to notify, and what advanced notice is required. The decisions made effect the safety, and working conditions of all students, community, and staff. Work is assigned verbally or through written work orders. Work is reviewed upon completion for quality, timeliness, and compliance to fire codes, building codes, and agency regulations, policies, and guidelines.

Position Duties:
  • 40% GENERAL MAINTENANCE: General maintenance and installations as needed. Includes but is not limited to: VCT and ceramic tiles, flooring, ceiling tiles, pressure washing, site clearance, hang shelving and pictures, minor plumbing repairs (e.g., replacing faucets, fixing leaks, or clearing clogged drains), replacing lamps, preventive maintenance inspections and service, aquatic pool maintenance, warehousing of attic stock, and other duties as assigned.  
  • 20% CARPENTRY: Performs general carpentry work on floors, roofs, stairs, partitions, doors, windows, and a variety of wood fixtures; repairs tables, desks, chairs, benches, and other furniture.
  • 15% SUPPORT STUDENT UNION INC. PROJECT WORK: In support of Student Union Inc. work parties, in-house refresh projects, or perform other work as needed in support of the broader Student Union Inc. team workload. Assist with light-guage metal framing. Repairing gypsum board, applying acoustic insulation, finalizing surfacing with taping and mudding tools, and applying texture from a texture machine. May include moving furnishings and fixtures to prepare site for work.
  • 10% PLASTER: Removes loose, chipped, cracked, or damaged plaster and lath; installs new lath, plasterboard or drywall; mixes and applies plaster, stucco, mortar or cement; finishes and prepares surface for painting with use of sanders. Builds, alters, or repairs brick, stone, or concrete block walls, buildings, roofs, and marble or tile surfaces; lays tile, brick, concrete blocks or other stone building material, using mortar or appropriate medium; pours or finishes concrete; patches existing surfaces; builds concrete forms; nails sheet-rock to framing; sands sheet-rock to finished texture; uses power tools such as sanders, saws, drills, and nailing guns to accomplish tasks.
  • 10% PAINTING: Inspects work site for proper equipment; moves furniture away from work site; may determine and requisition appropriate coating materials and equipment, and compute work time needed to complete the job; may schedule the job; erects and dismantles scaffolding; masks and covers protected work areas; scrapes, cleans, patches, tapes and coats dry wall; sands and/or power washes surfaces of interior and exterior walls, floors, ceilings, furniture, cabinets, woodwork, parking lots, vehicles or equipment; fills cracks, plasterboard joints, nail holes, dents and pores; caulks and waterproofs; applies coating materials such as oil base and water base paints, varnish, lacquer, epoxy, sealers, undercoating and primers, by brush, roller, and/or sprayer.
  • 5% LEAD WORK: Training, planning work & assigning work for Student Employees on special projects and post occupancy room turns. Create an inclusive working environment.
