Senior AS400 Application Engineer (IBM i)

As a Senior AS400 Application Engineer (IBM i), you will: Maintain, enhance, and support enterprise AS400 (IBM i) applications by implementing application fixes, enhancements, and production changes. Develop and maintain applications using RPG III, RPG IV, RPG ILE, RPG Free Format, CLP, and LANSA. Design, develop, and optimize DB2/400 (DB400) databases using embedded SQL. Manage AS400 job processing, batch jobs, scheduling, file systems, and database structures. Analyze, troubleshoot, and resolve production incidents while conducting Root Cause Analysis (RCA) to prevent recurring issues. Support ITSM processes by managing incidents, service requests, problem management, and change activities while meeting SLA, MTTR, and other operational KPIs. Analyze and maintain integrations between AS400 and enterprise systems, including SAP, POS, logistics, and other business applications. Evaluate application interfaces, APIs, and data flows to ensure seamless integration across enterprise platforms. Collaborate with DevOps teams to support deployment activities, release management, monitoring, and operational improvements. Mentor junior engineers, provide technical guidance, and assume Team Lead responsibilities when required. Support legacy application modernization initiatives, including coexistence strategies with SAP S/4HANA migration programs. Participate in reverse engineering and knowledge discovery for legacy systems with limited documentation. Maintain technical documentation and follow development standards and operational best practices. Ensure business continuity by delivering stable, secure, and reliable application support with minimal operational disruption. What You Bring to the Table: 4-6 years of experience in AS400 (IBM i) application development and production support. Strong hands-on experience with RPG III, RPG IV, RPG ILE, RPG Free Format, CLP programming, and LANSA. Expertise in DB2/400 (DB400) and embedded SQL development. Good understanding of AS400 job processing, batch scheduling, database design, file systems, and data structures. Experience supporting legacy ERP applications and custom-built enterprise systems. Knowledge of enterprise integrations involving SAP, POS, logistics, and other business applications. Hands-on experience with incident management, Root Cause Analysis (RCA), ITSM processes, and ticketing tools. Understanding of DevOps practices, monitoring tools, observability, CI/CD concepts, and release management. Exposure to automation tools, AI-assisted troubleshooting, and documentation platforms is an advantage. Familiarity with SAP S/4HANA migration initiatives and legacy system modernization strategies is desirable. Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving capabilities. Excellent communication, collaboration, mentoring, and stakeholder management skills. Ability to work effectively in complex enterprise environments with limited documentation and evolving business requirements. Work effectively with business SMEs, SAP teams, vendors, and cross-functional engineering teams. Mentor junior engineers and provide technical leadership when required. Support DevOps initiatives, release management, monitoring, and continuous service improvement. Contribute to application modernization while ensuring uninterrupted business operations. Adapt quickly to undocumented legacy applications through reverse engineering and knowledge discovery.
