JOB PURPOSE: Reporting to the Commissioner General; the purpose of this role is to develop and oversee the implementation of legal and policy frameworks that support BURS' strategic objectives and compliance with national laws. This role also provide expert legal advice to BURS' management and departments on various legal and regulatory issues, including tax and customs matters. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Ensures adherence to legal requirements, regulations, and industry standards across all organisational operations. Spearheads the formulation and execution of organisational policies and procedures in alignment with legal frameworks. Identifies, assesses, and mitigates legal risks to protect the BURS’ interests and assets. Manages legal disputes, lawsuits, and claims effectively to minimize legal liabilities and safeguard the BURS’ reputation. Oversees contract negotiations, drafting, and review processes to ensure favourable terms and legal compliance. Provides timely and accurate legal advice and guidance to senior management and departments on complex legal matters. Monitors regulatory changes and updates to ensure ongoing compliance and adaptation to legal requirements. Represents BURS in legal matters, negotiations, and interactions with external stakeholders, including regulatory bodies and government agencies. Develops and implements legal training programs to enhance staff awareness and understanding of legal obligations and best practices. Leads efforts to continuously improve legal processes, procedures, and practices to enhance efficiency and effectiveness within the legal department and across BURS. Requirements QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE A Master’s Degree or equivalent in Law, Tax Law, or any related field. Admission to practice law in the courts of Botswana and Membership of the Law Society of Botswana are mandatory for this role. Proven experience in board administration and/or corporate governance, At least 10 years relevant work experience, with a minimum of 5 years in a management capacity in a legal environment.
