The UN Women Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (ROAP) addresses gender equality and women’s empowerment challenges in the Asia-Pacific region, including deeply embedded discriminatory social norms and practices that perpetuate inequalities based on gender and other intersectional identities (e.g. ethnicity, class, region, age, disability, migratory status, and sexual orientation and gender identity, among others). The Regional Office works across the following areas: Governance and Inter-governmental support (including on Gender Statistics); Women’s Economic Empowerment (including Migration, Ending Violence Against Women; Women, Peace and Security; Climate Change, Disaster Risk Reduction and Humanitarian Action. The UN Women Asia Pacific Regional Office also oversees and manages programming in programme presences.
UN Women is implementing EU funded initiative with the short title of the project: ‘PROTECT, Protection of the Rights of Women and Children in Labour Migration.’ Implemented through a partnership between the ILO, UN Women, UNODC and UNICEF, ‘PROTECT’ will address women migrant workers’ vulnerabilities to violence, trafficking and labour exploitation, with financial support of the European Union. It will include project implementation in select ASEAN countries with a focus on Cambodia and Thailand.
