Superfund Site Safety and Health Officer (SSHO)

Versar is seeking a Site Safety and Health Officer (SSHO) to work at a project job site in Gadsden County, Florida. The SSHO shall be physically located in Florida for a project duration of up to 36 months.

The SSHO will monitor and oversee field activities performed by the Versar Team to ensure work is conducted safely and in accordance with the approved SSHP, APP, AHAs, contractual requirements, USACE EM 385-1-1, and other applicable safety and health regulations (DOT, OSHA, etc.), in coordination with the designated Site Manager and Construction Quality Manager.

• →Serve as the primary onsite safety and health representative responsible for implementing the project SSHP and APP in accordance with USACE EM 385-1-1, OSHA, and HAZWOPER requirements.
• →Develop, review, and implement Activity Hazard Analyses (AHAs) and ensure hazards and controls are communicated to personnel before work begins.
• →Conduct daily site safety inspections and monitor compliance with the SSHP, APP, AHAs, OSHA, EM 385-1-1, and project-specific safety requirements.
• →Provide safety oversight for excavation, heavy equipment, demolition, contaminated soil handling, hazardous waste operations, barrier wall construction, earthwork, dewatering, groundwater treatment, and site restoration.
• →Manage site-specific controls for contaminated materials, including PPE, exclusion zones, decontamination, contamination control, and personnel exposure prevention.
• →Coordinate and monitor air monitoring, dust and odor controls, emergency response procedures, and other measures required to protect workers and the surrounding community.
• →Review subcontractor safety plans, AHAs, training records, and qualifications and verify personnel meet project safety requirements.
• →Lead safety orientations, daily safety meetings/toolbox talks, incident investigations, corrective actions, and emergency preparedness activities.
• →Work closely with the Site Manager and CQM to identify hazards associated with upcoming work, changing site conditions, construction sequencing, and subcontractor activities.
• →Maintain comprehensive safety documentation and exercise the authority to stop or suspend unsafe work until appropriate corrective measures are implemented.

• Bachelor's degree in safety, occupational health, environmental science, construction management, engineering, or a related field preferred; equivalent demonstrated safety experience may be considered.
• Minimum 5 years of demonstrated safety experience on construction, environmental remediation, hazardous waste, or heavy civil projects.
• Demonstrated experience providing onsite safety oversight for construction and/or environmental remediation activities.
• Demonstrated knowledge of OSHA construction safety requirements and hazardous waste site safety.
• Demonstrated working knowledge of USACE EM 385-1-1 and its application to federal construction/remediation projects.
• Current OSHA 40-Hour HAZWOPER and 8-Hour Site Supervisor certification.
• Current 30-Hour OSHA Construction Safety and Health training preferred/required based on applicable project requirements.
• Demonstrated experience developing, reviewing, or implementing SSHPs, APPs, AHAs, and site-specific safety procedures.
• Experience with hazardous materials, contaminated soil/sediment, hazardous waste, decontamination, PPE selection, and exposure control.
• Experience conducting field safety inspections and documenting corrective actions.
• Strong understanding of excavation, heavy equipment, confined areas, lifting operations, traffic control, electrical hazards, fall protection, and other construction hazards.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to effectively communicate safety requirements to project managers, superintendents, subcontractors, laborers, equipment operators, and technical personnel.
• Ability to work full-time onsite in Gadsden County, Florida for the duration of the project.
• Must possess and maintain an active and valid Florida driver's license without restrictions.
• Must be proficient in English, both written and verbal, to ensure effective communication and collaboration.
• Successful results of preemployment screenings, including federal background check, MVR, and drug screen.
• Comply with company drug and alcohol policy.
• Be authorized to work in the US or will be authorized by the successful candidate’s start date.

• USACE Site Safety and Health Officer (SSHO) experience on Superfund sites.
• Experience serving as an SSHO on USACE construction or environmental remediation projects.
• Experience with EM 385-1-1 compliance on federal projects.
• OSHA 500/510 or equivalent safety training.
• Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), or equivalent certification.
• Direct experience with RCRA/CERCLA/Superfund projects.
• Experience with dioxin, arsenic, chromium, PCP, petroleum/NAPL, or other hazardous contaminant remediation.
• Experience with contaminated soil excavation and off-site hazardous waste transportation.
• Experience with dewatering, groundwater treatment, air monitoring, dust/odor control, or environmental sampling.
• Experience working around residential properties, wetlands, or other environmentally sensitive areas.
• Experience with USACE RMS or other federal construction documentation systems.
