Bilingual Self Defense Instructor

The 32BJ Training Fund is seeking qualified candidates for part-time Bilingual  Self Defense instructors for classes taught in the Washington D.C., Virginia, and Maryland area.

About us:

SEIU 32BJ is a service union headquartered in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan that represents cleaners, maintenance workers, service staff, and security officers in the New York City area and nine other states on the East Coast. Our mission is to educate every member so that they have the tools they need to meet the challenges of a changing industry.

Who we’re looking for:

• Creative, dynamic instructors with security/law enforcement training experience, including self-defense, who enjoy working in diverse linguistic and cultural settings
• Teachers who have a passion to empower our Union members through teaching industry skills and education

Responsibilities:

• Plan and implement lesson plans that are aligned with the curriculum and incorporate the provided educational materials
• Teach course content using a student-centered approach
• Follow applicable agency curriculum requirements
• Co-teach with 1-2 other instructors, on occasion
• Maintain and submit records of attendance
• Maintain ongoing communication with supervisor
• Participate in relevant professional development activities, as available

Qualifications:

• High School diploma or its equivalent
• Proficiency in Spanish and English
• Experience teaching self-defense training, particularly to adult learners
• CPR/AED/First Aid Instructor certification from American Heart Association or American Red Cross a plus
• Flexible schedule (willing to work nights and weekends)
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to interact with students from a variety of linguistic and cultural backgrounds
• Ability to use digital platforms to instruct, communicate, and record program data

COVID-19 Considerations

• Record of completed COVID-19 vaccine or confirmed medical/religious exemption form organization prior to interviewing
• Compliance with current COVID-19 protocols of the organization

Classes Offered

• Mainly weekends however, sessions also run some weekdays and weeknights 

Location(s)

• Various locations in the Capital Area District  

Compensation:  

• $75 per teaching hour for classes requiring instructor certifications
• $50 per hour for non-teaching activities such as professional development
• Paid preparation time
• Paid in-house training, coaching, and professional development opportunities
• Paid travel time to off-site/employer locations
