Cardiovascular Surgery Research Tech III

The Research Laboratory Technician provides both scientific and operational support for an active cardiovascular research laboratory in the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and School of Medicine. This position coordinates laboratory operations, oversees equipment and inventory management, assists with regulatory compliance, and performs advanced molecular and cellular biology techniques while also supervising junior laboratory personnel and trainees. The position works closely with the Principal Investigator to ensure efficient laboratory function while contributing directly to the execution of research projects.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Bachelor's degree in the biological and/or physical sciences with two years' of related clinical/research experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience. Master's degree in biology or related physical science preferred. LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, and/or REGISTRATION: N/A ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1. Consults with principal investigator and assists in the development of plans for research experiments and data collection procedures. 2. Modifies existing laboratory procedures and protocols to meet the needs of research projects as required. 3. Prepares detailed reports on the results of experiments and discusses the interpretation of results with principal investigator. 4. Reviews scientific journals, abstracts and other related literature for information concerning experimental procedures and supplemental support information. Organizes information for use in applicable research projects. 5. Conducts complex chemical, physical, and biological tests on experimental materials. 6. Performs micro-analysis, tepids analysis, enzyme studies, and chromatographic studies on various types of tissues, secretions, and excretions. 7. Monitors the care of research animals; take blood samples, pressures, and other specimens and measurements as required by research protocols; and performs minor animal surgery. 8. Supervises, trains, and reviews the work of students and lower level technicians engaged in clinical/research laboratory work. 9. Operates complex specialized laboratory instruments and instructs other personnel in the use and operations of these instruments. 10. Maintains inventory of supplies, materials, and equipment as needed for laboratory operations. 11. Performs other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
