Job Summary
Head of Debt (“HoD”) supports the Investment Banking business by advancing overall CIB financial goals and objectives. HoD partners with various business teams in maximizing the bottom line opportunities for the Investment business. The role will be involved in identifying and securing long term funding deals, managing loan book portfolio and, be part of CIB decision making and implementation process in support to the Director of CIB. The role undertakes all debt strategic financial planning, reporting to stakeholders and all aspects of large transactions for the business, including due diligence.HoD is responsible for all stakeholder engagement with the Head of AR Debt and all IB stakeholders in Absa Limited.
HoD conducts risks management and continuously reviews policies and internal control procedures, effecting necessary changes where needed.
- Advise on how to meet targets and create business strategies
- Provide investment advice, tactics and recommendations
- Support in targeting and winning business
- Negotiate and structure large deals
- Liaise with all parties involved in transactions and assist with negotiations
- Assess and predict financial risks and returns related to the debt business
- Contribute to competitive bid proposals and formal presentations
- Financial analysis related to transactions
- Financial modelling and scenario analysis
- Drafting documentation with a compelling rationale to generate interest in funding proposals, CPF, project finance opportunities
- Exposure to deal negotiations
- Client-facing interaction with senior decision-making executives
- Working directly with the senior management team on deals
- Liaison with Treasury, Credit, Corporate Banking, Legal, and ABSA Capital, etc.
- Support on the deal origination and Business development
- Financial modelling and analysis of financial data (both historic and forecast)
- Review of BSC nd NBC documents and taking new transactions to BSC
- Review of credit papers
- Due diligence reviews on potential transactions
- Review and sign off on Letter of interest, Term Sheet and Mandate Letters
- Work closely with Corporate Heads, Relationship Managers and their teams to provide complete financing solutions to customers.
- Relationship Management which involves client visits.
- Assist country corporate teams in the execution of mandates.
- Assist country corporate teams in the preparation of NPA and deal applications.
- Identify and translate opportunities into new product programs or product enhancements to generate profitable business and product performance.
- Work with the appropriate support areas to ensure that legal and contingency requirements are established with regards to debt.
- Monitor service level agreements (internal and external) and relevant KPIs to debt.
- Develop and produce business cases to support enhancements and new product approval.
- Support Head of Debt in delivery
- Ensure that Salesforce and ESTPM and all databases are updated.
- Support in-country teams with product execution and delivery
- Conducting client and deal level analysis
- Support Product Head with client planning
- Work with internal departments to ensure company meets clients’ expectations (Products).
- Preparing pitches/discussion document for discussions with prospective/new clients
- Develop skills and knowledge required as a business manager, supporting the corporate banking relationship team in business development, structuring and execution of debt transactions.
- Develop a close working relationship with the corporate banking front office team, sharing knowledge and good practice and helping to develop Corporate Finance and Credit capabilities.
- Build collaborative network with peers including other SBUs, clusters etc namely Absa Capital and Absa Investment Banking.
- Actively support and further Absa activities in the local community.

- Lead, develop, and empower the Debt team, fostering a high-performance culture, continuous development, and alignment with organizational objectives;
- Manage and strengthen relationships with key internal stakeholders, including Operations, Credit, and Business Leadership, ensuring strategic alignment, effective communication, and business support;
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives across Debt processes, enhancing operational efficiency, promoting innovation, and ensuring alignment with organizational best practices and standards of excellence.
