Job Summary
To support the Head of Private & Personal Banking (PPB) Enterprise Risk Management by managing PPB’s risk appetite through optimising existing risk appetite framework and ensuring effectiveness of risk appetite across the businesses in PPB. The role to also take responsibility for coordinating, developing and executing best practice processes and tools to assist business and legal entities in optimising scenario and stress testing capabilities and assessing vulnerabilities to external drivers.This role will provide leadership and best practice advice with regards to data infrastructure, impairments, projecting regulatory, financial and risk metrics as well as buffer setting to PPB.
Responsibilities
~3 min read- →Take end-to-end ownership of the PPB Risk Appetite Framework, ensuring it remains fit-for-purpose, forward-looking, and aligned to Group strategy and regulatory expectations.
- →Define, review, and optimise risk appetite statements, metrics, thresholds, and limits across all material risk types (e.g. credit, operational, strategy, insurance).
- →Ensure clear linkage between business strategy, financial plans, capital adequacy and risk appetite, particularly within ICAAP, recovery and resolution planning processes.
- →Monitor and report on risk appetite utilisation, highlighting emerging risks, breaches, and trends to senior management and governance committees.
- →Drive timely escalation and remediation of risk appetite breaches, ensuring appropriate governance and management actions.
- →Embed the risk appetite framework into scenario design, stress testing, and forward-looking risk assessments.
- →Assess vulnerability of portfolios relative to risk appetite limits under stressed conditions and recommend management actions where needed.
- →Translate risk appetite into clear, actionable insights for executive committees and Board-level forums.
- →Take overall responsibility for the data strategies, frameworks, OLA’s and execution, ensuring that adequate governance is in place for the process.
- →Further develop and maintain the strategies and frameworks to ensure utilisation of best practices to best meet the needs of the business.
- →Ensure all instances where breaches occur are reported to and brought to the attention of senior management and governing bodies where applicable.
- →Maintain the AGL stress testing framework.
- →Ensure that stress testing functions are embedded in all business units, legal entities and risk types.
- →Manage internal and external audit requirements regarding the scenario and stress testing data and execution process.
- →Stay abreast of new developments related to scenario development and stress testing especially with regard to regulatory developments.
- →Take overall responsibility to manage stakeholders, to provide assurance on the soundness of the data framework.
- →Ensure stress testing practices are adherent to BCBS 450 principles on Stress Testing.
- →Coordinate the presentation and approval of forward-looking views at the correct governance committees, as required.
- →Use the Group macro-economic variables to support the financial planning, IFRS, recovery and resolution planning and any other scenario or stress testing activities through the relevant governance process.
- →Co-ordinate and collaborate and assess the impact of scenario analysis or stress testing on the different businesses and risk types.
- →Translate stress testing outputs into clear, actionable insights for executive committees and Board-level forums.
- →Lead by example in building strong internal and external relationships with colleagues.
- →Act as a trusted advisor to senior stakeholders, providing expert guidance on risk appetite, stress testing, and resilience.
- →Ensuring stakeholders are supported and assisted for successful delivery of regulatory stress testing requirements and scenarios.
- →Establish and maintain clear and regular communication with business in creating awareness and understanding of developments relating scenario planning and stress testing.
- Honours degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Actuarial Science, Finance, Accounting, Economics or Quantitative Management (NQF level no.8)
- 10+ years of experience in risk management or related field within a top tier investment bank
- Practical experience of using analytics / modelling to solve complex business problems
