The Venous Access / Infusion Therapy Clinical Nurse Lead is responsible for overseeing the ongoing operations of the assigned nursing specialty area to ensure safe, high-quality patient care and service excellence. This position provides clinical leadership, resource management, and operational oversight while serving as a mentor and coach to nursing and support staff. The role utilizes advanced nursing knowledge, critical thinking, and leadership skills to coordinate venous access and infusion therapy services, support performance improvement initiatives, promote positive employee relations, and maintain compliance with organizational policies, professional standards, and regulatory requirements. The Clinical Nurse Lead serves as a change agent and collaborates with nursing leadership to implement operational and clinical improvements while maintaining respectful and professional relationships with patients, families, physicians, and interdisciplinary team members.
- Performs venous access procedures within the scope of Registered Nurse licensure, utilizing appropriate clinical techniques and patient safety practices.
- Administers and monitors infusion therapy treatments, evaluating patient responses and making appropriate nursing interventions within scope of practice.
- Assesses patients to determine appropriate venous access methods and identifies, monitors, and addresses potential complications.
- Develops, implements, and evaluates individualized plans of care for patients requiring vascular access and infusion therapy services.
- Provides education to patients and families regarding venous access procedures, infusion therapy, treatment expectations, and self-care practices.
- Monitors the quality of patient care delivery and promotes adherence to established standards, policies, and procedures.
- Provides leadership, coaching, mentoring, and support to nursing and support staff.
- Participates in performance improvement initiatives and promotes evidence-based clinical practice.
- Collaborates with interdisciplinary team members to ensure coordinated, efficient, and patient-centered care.
- Supports resource management, staffing effectiveness, productivity initiatives, and operational goals.
- Assists with orientation, competency validation, education, and professional development of team members.
- Promotes a culture of safety, accountability, professionalism, and continuous improvement.
- Participates in departmental projects, committees, and organizational initiatives as assigned.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Ability to lead staff in the delivery of safe, effective, and patient-centered care.
- Ability to lead and support quality improvement and performance improvement initiatives.
- Demonstrated critical-thinking and decision-making skills related to patient care and departmental operations.
- Knowledge of healthcare operations, resource utilization, staffing practices, and productivity management.
- Ability to mentor, coach, and educate team members regarding clinical practice and technology utilization.
- Comprehensive knowledge of nursing principles, vascular access procedures, infusion therapy, and evidence-based practice.
- Ability to influence positive behaviors, teamwork, and professional relationships.
- Demonstrated leadership abilities including accountability, independent judgment, problem-solving, and conflict resolution.
- Ability to assess employee development needs and provide constructive coaching and counseling.
- Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal, and communication skills.
- Basic computer proficiency, including experience with electronic health record systems and healthcare technology.
- Knowledge and competencies specific to assigned patient populations and specialty areas.
- Ability to function independently while collaborating effectively within an interdisciplinary healthcare environment.
- Associate Degree in Nursing required.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
- One year of nursing experience in an acute care setting preferred.
- One year of charge nurse, team lead, or other relevant leadership experience preferred.
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the applicable state required.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
- Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification required.
- Additional licensure or certification requirements may apply depending on department assignment, specialty area, facility requirements, or state regulations.
