Processes prescriptions by obtaining patient and insurance information, maintaining current patient data, and ensuring pharmacist verification before distribution. Prepares and dispenses medications accurately under the supervision of a pharmacist, including compounding and labeling prescriptions. Communicates with patients, physicians, and other healthcare practitioners regarding prescription status, transfers, and potential delays. Maintains inventory by coordinating receiving, stocking, checking for discrepancies, and monitoring expiration dates. Manages pharmaceutical expenses by reviewing costs, using correct codes, and utilizing patient assistance programs. Organizes and maintains the pharmacy work area, contributing ideas for improvement and assisting in training new staff. Communicates prescription benefit plans, prior authorizations, appeals, and copayments with patients and prescribers. Mentors new staff and assists with training pharmacy technician students, interns, and residents. Generates and runs reports for refill reminders, patient discharge data, and other departmental needs. Ensures compliance with Medicare/Medicaid regulations, billing guidelines, and third-party pay plans. Participates in disaster operations and maintains readiness according to department policy. Other duties as assigned.
  • Competent in medical terminology, medication names and medication use [Required]
  • Proficient with prescription-filling software and other computer skills [Required]
  • Ability to work under pressure [Required]
  • Ability to interact professionally with public and other medical staff [Required]
  • Knowledge of compounding oral/topical medications [Required]
  • Knowledgeable in all the major prescription insurance carrier reimbursement guidelines and eligibility for coverage by third-party payers [Required]
  • Knowledge of Federal and State laws governing the practice of pharmacy and delegation of responsibilities including which tasks may only be performed by a licensed Pharmacist [Required]
  • Moderate proficiency in MS Office: Word, Excel, and Outlook [Required]
  • Previous experience in a managed healthcare organization, medical insurance company, pharmacy benefit management or other healthcare related entity. [Preferred]
  • Specialty pharmacy experience preferred. [Preferred]
  • High School Grad or Equiv [Required]
  • 2+ pharmacy technician experience, in a retail pharmacy, mail-order pharmacy, central fill, or hospital setting [Required]
  • 3+ retail pharmacy experience [Preferred]
  • Prior experience processing and filling prescriptions [Preferred]
  • Registered Pharmacy Technician (RPhT) [Required]
  • NHA Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) [Required] OR PTCB Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) [Required]
