Service Authority - Utility Mechanic (Amherst, VA; Madison Heights, VA)

Amherst County Service Authority (ACSA) is seeking a Utility Mechanic to join our water and sewer operations team. This position performs hands-on work installing, maintaining, repairing, and replacing water and sewer mains, service lines, meters, hydrants, valves, and other utility infrastructure.

As a Utility Mechanic, you will:

• Install new water and sewer mains, valves, fire hydrants, blowoffs, and other system components.
• Install new water and sewer services, including service lines, meters, backflow preventers, cleanouts, and related infrastructure.
• Tap water mains and perform boring operations under paved areas and other surface obstacles.
• Maintain, repair, and replace existing water and sewer mains, service lines, and appurtenances.
• Maintain and repair water meters, meter boxes, fire hydrants, sewer cleanouts, and other utility infrastructure.
• Maintain water and sewer easements and ACSA properties, including mowing and tree removal.
• Load and unload treatment chemicals, materials, tools, and equipment.
• Operate fleet vehicles, including large vehicles, and light and heavy equipment.
• Use hand and power tools and perform routine maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
• Maintain accurate records of water and sewer operations activities.
• Work independently and as part of a crew to complete assigned projects safely and efficiently.
• Identify safety concerns and assist supervisors in determining safe and appropriate methods for completing work.

• Ability to read and write English.
• Current, valid Virginia driver's license.
• Basic knowledge of mechanical equipment and safety procedures.
• Ability to safely use hand tools and light power tools.
• Ability to obtain VDOT Traffic Control Flagger certification within one year of employment.
• Ability to obtain First Aid and CPR certification within one year of employment.
• Ability to obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within two years of employment.

• High school diploma or GED is preferred, but not required.

• Are comfortable working in changing weather and outdoor conditions.

This is a physically active, outdoor position. Work may involve bending, stooping, lifting, and repeated lifting of 50 pounds or more, particularly during treatment chemical handling and pipe installation.

Utility Mechanics routinely work in conditions that may include heat, cold, rain, darkness, dirt, grease, sewage, chemicals, noise, vibrations, water and wastewater, vegetation, insects, and other outdoor hazards. The position also involves operating power tools, heavy equipment, and large vehicles.

Utility Mechanics participate in a 24-hour, 7-day-a-week emergency response rotation, including nights, holidays, weekends, and periods of severe weather. Employees may be called upon to respond to water and sewer emergencies when needed.
