Service Authority - Water Plant Operator II (Amherst, VA; Madison Heights, VA)

Amherst County Service Authority (ACSA) is seeking a Water Plant Operator, Class II to join our water treatment and operations team.

This position performs water treatment plant and water distribution system operations while continuing to develop and maintain the knowledge and skills required for Virginia operator licensure. The position may also perform wastewater treatment work as needed.

ACSA operators may be assigned to the water treatment plant as well as other treatment, storage, and distribution facilities.

As a Class II Water Plant Operator, you will:

• Independently operate the water treatment plant to meet regulatory standards.
• Adjust raw and finished water flows to meet system demand.
• Collect and test water samples and document water quality results.
• Monitor gauges, meters, equipment, and treatment processes.
• Adjust chemical feed equipment and monitor chemical supplies.
• Safely unload, store, and handle treatment chemicals.
• Inspect plant equipment and perform basic scheduled preventive maintenance on pumps, motors, valves, and other equipment.
• Maintain daily shift operation logs and accurately document laboratory results, equipment performance, instrument readings, and other operational information.
• Perform similar operational duties at wastewater treatment facilities as needed.
• Perform buildings and grounds maintenance.
• Occasionally assist maintenance and construction staff with traffic control and other duties.
• Work in a manner that protects employee and public safety, ACSA and private property, public health, and the environment.

• High school diploma or GED.
• Two years of water plant operations experience.
• Current and valid Virginia driver's license.
• Virginia Water Treatment Operator, Class II license.
• Ability to meet and maintain all applicable Virginia qualification requirements for water treatment plant operators.
• First Aid, First Response, and CPR certification within one year of employment.

• Short school or college-level classes in wastewater and/or water treatment plant operation.

• Six months of wastewater treatment plant operations experience.

The ideal candidate will have knowledge and experience related to:

• Water treatment and plant operations.

• Water and wastewater treatment chemicals and supplies.
• Treatment processes and regulatory requirements.
• Reading technical manuals and interpreting information from equipment, gauges, and laboratory testing.
• Basic maintenance of mechanical equipment, buildings, and grounds.
• Basic arithmetic calculations.
• Troubleshooting and analytical problem-solving.
• Biological and chemical concepts related to water and wastewater treatment.

You should also be able to communicate effectively, maintain good working relationships, and continue learning as treatment technology, regulations, and operational requirements evolve.

This is an active position that involves both plant and outdoor work. Duties may require stooping, bending, lifting, and periodic repeated lifting of 50 pounds.

Operators work in a variety of weather conditions and may be exposed to moving machinery, treatment chemicals, dirt, soil, grease, noise, vibration, and other industrial hazards.

This position requires non-standard work hours, including shifts that may begin early in the morning or occur during evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Water Plant Operators are also subject to 24-hour emergency call responsibilities and must be available to respond to operational emergencies when needed.
