The UHP Analytical Engineer is an exciting role supporting analytical instrumentation across Air Products’ gas production and distribution facilities in the Americas. This role will provide technical expertise in the following areas related to analytical instrument technology: performance testing, installation, commissioning, maintenance, troubleshooting, and obsolescence planning.

This position will be based in our Chandler, AZ office with up to 25% travel throughout the Americas region. 

The UHP Analytical Engineer is responsible for supporting, optimizing, and continuously improving advanced analytical measurement systems used for ultra-high-purity (UHP) gas production quality assurance. This role serves as a technical subject matter expert for trace-level gas analysis, analytical instrumentation, method development, system design, troubleshooting, and quality system compliance.

The position will partner with Process Controls, Operations, Quality, Engineering, Operational Excellence, Laboratories, and external vendors to ensure analytical systems deliver accurate, reliable, and compliant measurements.

  • Possess in-depth knowledge to design, test and support analytical systems that measure ppb and ppt-level impurities in bulk gas streams (N2, O2, Ar, H2, He, CO2) as well as the associated demands of these systems meeting Statistical Process Control (SPC), high reliability and continuous improvement expectations. 

  • Possess strong experience with gas analysis using various detection techniques: spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, gas chromatography, particle counters, electrochemical sensors, and more.

  • Experience with method development, gas sampling systems and process control systems is preferred but is not required. 

Responsibilities

  • Support UHP analytical systems requirements of operating facilities. Drive analytical strategy through consensus building with associated stakeholders. 

  • Ensure uptime, reliability, and data integrity of gas analysis systems meet internal and external expectations. 

  • Define and support analytical technology selection, sample conditioning system design, installation, commissioning, and maintenance for UHP analytical systems.

  • Work with vendors to identify appropriate analytical systems for operating facilities and test innovative analytical technologies that have low total cost of ownership.

  • Develop and lead training activities related to the equipment and the processes needed to operate and maintain UHP analytical systems. 

  • Support FMEA activities and proactively identify risks to system performance. Lead 8D investigations, Root Cause Analysis, implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPA). 

  • Ensure compliance with QMS and customer expectations. Using a data-driven approach, lead improvements in reliability, accuracy, and data quality. 

  • Build and maintain meaningful relationships with key internal and external customers.

  • Actively participate in multi-functional teams. 

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree in instrumentation, chemistry, engineering, or a related scientific field is required.

  • A Master’s degree is preferred but is not required. 

  • 15 years of work experience with UHP analytical systems in the Specialty or Industrial Gas industries is required.

  • Fluency in written and verbal English is required. 

  • Flexibility to travel up to 25% is required.

  • A valid driver’s license and a good driving record are required.
