Job Title: Youth and BIPOC Voter Engagement Canvasser

Location: This is a part-time hybrid (some in-person work required) position that must be based in Anchorage, Eagle River, or the Mat-Su Valley. 

Reports to: Senior Political and Movement Strategist
Position runs: August 2026 - November 2026
Temporary position:  Approximately 10-25 hours a week 

Compensation: $22-26/hour 


Position Overview:

The Alaska Center is seeking a dedicated and talented individual to serve as a Canvasser in Anchorage, AK. This position will support The Alaska Center’s work to elect decision-makers who will stand up for clean air and water, promote solutions to climate change, and support a strong democracy. The position will conduct voter outreach and engagement, and volunteer cultivation in Alaska to support electing champions. The ideal candidate will be passionate about elections and skilled at building relationships.

We engage, empower, and elect Alaskans to stand up for clean air and water, a strong democracy, and for a fair and equitable transition from an extractive economy to a regenerative economy. Our issue priorities are protecting salmon habitat, advancing clean energy solutions in the face of rapid climate change, and amplifying Alaskans’ voices in the public process. In partnership with our sister organization The Alaska Center Education Fund, we achieve our vision through youth education and leadership development, community organizing and mobilization, and electing leaders who will champion our values.


Core Responsibilities: Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:


Voter Engagement and Turnout, Volunteer Engagement and Cultivation

  • Door to door, street and event canvassing to engage and encourage youth and BIOPC voters to vote based on the AKC’s values of climate and democracy;
  • Cultivate a network of volunteers to engage residents in Anchorage to support youth and BIBOC voter engagement;
  • Support community members and leaders as they host their own events to engage their communities in voting;
  • Data entry to document and maintain relationships with voters

Skills and Qualifications:

  • 0-2 years of experience with grassroots organizing, electoral campaigns, civic engagement or integrated voter engagement programs;
  • Passion for The Alaska Center’s mission, vision and programs;
  • Comfortable working outdoors in Anchorage weather conditions, including changing temperatures and seasonal conditions;
  • Ability to handle moderate levels of rejection from large levels of voter contact; 
  • Ability to meaningfully engage Alaskans from diverse backgrounds;
  • Experience with or desire to work with communities of color, cross-cultural communication, and understanding of inclusive organizing;
  • Commitment to understanding race, class, gender, and other equity issues in organizing and politics;
  • Demonstrated initiative and ability to work well independently;
  • Experience with the Voter Activation Network and affiliated databases is a plus;
  • Ability to maintain a positive attitude and solution-based approach in high pressure or difficult situations;
  • Willingness to engage in phone and door canvasses, volunteer recruitment, host volunteer meetings, plan campaign events.
  • Experience working and living in Anchorage is a plus.
