The Specialist Software Engineer role offers a unique opportunity to join a fun, innovative AppliedAI team within the AI & Data Science (AI&D) – Enterprise Automation organization at Amgen.
As a Specialist Software Engineer, you will be an integral member of the AppliedAI – Custom GPT Practice team, which empowers Amgen teams and staff members to build high‑value, purpose‑driven Custom GPTs through expert design and development support. You will play a key role in driving adoption of this program across multiple Amgen organizations by partnering with cross‑functional teams and senior leaders. This role requires strong technical depth, adaptability, and the ability to operate effectively in a fast‑evolving environment.
The primary responsibility of this role is to design, develop, and deploy secure, scalable, and intuitive AI agents and Custom GPTs on leading enterprise AI platforms and tools.
Design, develop, and deploy GenAI‑powered agents using large language models (LLMs), embeddings, vector databases, RAG frameworks, and prompt engineering.
Develop, test, and deploy Custom GPTs using the ChatGPT Enterprise UI for multiple functional teams across Amgen.
Partner closely with functional teams, product owners, data engineers, platform teams, DevOps, and business SMEs to translate business requirements into reliable, production‑grade solutions.
Produce clear technical design documentation, runbooks, and handover materials to support operational sustainability.
Mentor engineers and provide technical leadership to accelerate GenAI adoption across the enterprise.
Drive platform adoption through best practices, reusable patterns, and shared assets, including agent templates, prompt patterns, Databricks notebooks, and n8n workflows.
Implement Model Context Protocols (MCPs) using APIs, SDKs, and orchestration tools to enable seamless integration with GenAI‑powered agents.
Build integration layers and event‑driven orchestrations using n8n (webhooks, nodes, APIs) to connect systems, trigger agent workflows, and implement human‑in‑the‑loop processes.
Drive experimentation and innovation with new models, features, agents, and frameworks (e.g., OpenAI, Databricks, LangChain).
Ensure solutions comply with Amgen’s data privacy, security, and regulatory standards.
Stay current with advancements in Generative AI, LLMs, and RAG methodologies to continuously improve platform capabilities.

Requirements
~1 min readMaster’s degree with 5+ years of experience in Computer Science, IT, or a related field, OR
Bachelor’s degree with 8+ years of experience in Computer Science, IT, or a related field.
Ability to work effectively with global, distributed teams using Scaled Agile methodologies.

Experience working with Power Automate, Tableau, JIRA, and Smartsheet.
Familiarity with GxP environments and systems validation.
Experience working in regulated industries such as biotech or healthcare.
Hands‑on experience designing and building cloud‑native solutions, preferably on AWS (e.g., Bedrock, Lambda, SageMaker).
Hands‑on experience with vector databases, embedding models, and retrieval pipelines.
Strong programming skills in Python, with familiarity in GenAI libraries such as Transformers, LangChain, and Hugging Face.
Experience with LLM fine‑tuning, prompt engineering, and model evaluation.
Experience designing secure integrations using API gateways and RESTful services.
Strong problem‑solving skills and the ability to perform effectively in a fast‑paced environment.
