The Ultrasound Technician is responsible for performing diagnostic ultrasound examinations using specialized imaging equipment to produce high-quality images for physician interpretation. This role requires formal education in diagnostic medical sonography, certification by a recognized accrediting body, and the ability to provide safe, accurate, and compassionate patient care in accordance with established clinical protocols and regulatory standards.

  • Perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures as ordered by a physician, following established protocols and standards of practice.

  • Prepare patients for procedures by explaining exams, positioning patients appropriately, and ensuring patient comfort and safety.

  • Acquire and evaluate ultrasound images for technical quality and completeness.

  • Recognize normal and abnormal anatomy and communicate findings that require immediate attention per protocol.

  • Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA and organizational privacy requirements.

  • Operate, adjust, and maintain ultrasound imaging equipment to ensure optimal performance.

  • Perform routine quality control checks and report equipment malfunctions or safety concerns.

  • Follow infection prevention, radiation safety (as applicable), and workplace safety guidelines.

  • Accurately document procedures, patient information, and exam results in the electronic medical record (EMR).

  • Communicate effectively with radiologists, physicians, nurses, and other clinical staff regarding exam requirements and patient conditions.

  • Assist with scheduling, workflow coordination, and patient throughput as needed.

  • Adhere to professional standards, accreditation requirements, and applicable federal, state, and local regulations.

  • Maintain required licensure, certifications, and continuing education.

  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and departmental meetings as assigned.

Requirements

  • Completion of basic training in ultrasound, and

  • Graduation from an accredited Diagnostic Medical Sonography program.

  • 3–5-years clinical training or experience performing diagnostic ultrasound procedures (student clinical hours acceptable for entry-level roles).

  • Current certification in at least one of the following:

    • ARDMS (American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography)

    • ARRT (American Registry of Radiologic Technologists)
