The Magnetic Resonance Safety Officer (MRSO) serves as the subject matter expert and leader for MRI safety, quality, and regulatory compliance within the Arkansas Children’s organization. This role is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining a comprehensive MRI safety program while supporting high-quality, patient-centered imaging services.
The MRSO collaborates with radiologists, physicists, technologists, HTM, facilities, and leadership to ensure safe, efficient, and compliant MRI operations across all ACH campuses. This position also leads quality improvement initiatives, supports staff education, and promotes a culture of safety across all MRI environments.
1. Serves as the MRI Safety Officer (MRSO) and institutional resource for MRI safety, ensuring compliance with MRI safety standards, regulations, and accrediting body requirements (e.g., ACR, DNV, state, and federal guidelines).
2. Develops, implements, and maintains MRI safety policies, procedures, protocols, and emergency preparedness plans, including MRI zoning, screening processes, access control, ferromagnetic safety, quench events, fire response, and code situations.
3. Leads MRI safety and quality improvement initiatives by investigating safety events and near misses, developing corrective action plans, monitoring safety and quality metrics, analyzing data and trends, and implementing process improvements.
4. Supports accreditation readiness and continuous regulatory compliance through ongoing monitoring, documentation, survey preparation, and participation in organizational performance improvement activities.
5. Maintains clinical competency and performs MRI procedures as needed to support patient care, operational needs, and workflow efficiency.
6. Collaborates with physicians, nursing, anesthesia, facilities, biomedical engineering, and other interdisciplinary teams to ensure safe, efficient, and appropriate MRI services.
7. Supports departmental operations through workflow optimization, scheduling coordination, patient throughput initiatives, equipment oversight, troubleshooting, and coordination of maintenance activities.
8. Develops, coordinates, and delivers MRI safety education, orientation, annual competency training, and ongoing staff development programs.
9. Serves as a mentor and subject matter expert for MRI technologists, students, and other staff, promoting best practices in MRI safety and quality.
10. Leads or participates in MRI Safety Committee activities and other multidisciplinary committees, projects, and organizational initiatives.
11. Promotes a culture of safety, accountability, continuous learning, and operational excellence through leadership, communication, and evidence-based practice.
12. Performs other duties as assigned by leadership.
