The Assistant Vice President of Facilities (AVP), Maintenance & Planning is a senior executive responsible for the strategic leadership, operational excellence, and long‑range planning of the health system's-built environment. This role oversees all facilities operations, maintenance programs, capital planning, construction management, environment of care compliance, and master facility planning across a multi‑site, high‑acuity health system.
The AVP ensures that all facilities are safe, resilient, efficient, and aligned with the organization's strategic growth priorities. This leader partners closely with clinical, operational, and financial executives to support patient‑centered care delivery and long‑term organizational sustainability.
Responsibilities
~1 min read- Lead the system‑wide master facility plan, ensuring alignment with clinical service line growth, population health needs, and long‑term capital strategy.
- Develop multi‑year capital investment roadmaps, prioritizing safety, regulatory compliance, modernization, and ROI.
- Serve as executive sponsor for major construction and renovation initiatives, ensuring on‑time, on‑budget delivery.
- Oversee all preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance programs to ensure optimal performance of buildings, utilities, and clinical infrastructure.
- Ensure compliance with Joint Commission, CMS, NFPA, ASHRAE, and other regulatory standards.
- Drive modernization of building systems, including energy management, sustainability initiatives, and smart‑facility technologies.
- Lead the planning, design, procurement, and execution of all construction and renovation projects across the system.
- Manage relationships with architects, engineers, contractors, and external partners.
- Implement standardized project governance, risk management, and quality assurance processes.
- Ensure continuous readiness for regulatory surveys and accreditation.
- Oversee emergency preparedness for infrastructure‑related events (power failures, weather events, system outages).
- Champion a culture of safety, reliability, and proactive risk mitigation.
- Develop and manage operating and capital budgets for facilities, maintenance, and planning functions.
- Optimize resource allocation, vendor performance, and lifecycle asset management.
- Identify opportunities for cost savings, energy efficiency, and operational improvements.
- Lead a multidisciplinary team of directors, managers, engineers, and skilled trades.
- Foster a culture of accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement.
- Build strong partnerships with clinical and administrative leaders to support patient‑centered operations.
Requirements
~1 min read- Bachelor's degree in engineering, Architecture, Facilities Management, or health related field required.
- Master's degree in business, Healthcare Administration, Engineering, or related discipline preferred.
- 10+ years of progressive leadership in healthcare facilities management, construction, or capital planning.
- Experience overseeing large‑scale capital projects ($50M+).
- Demonstrated success in a complex, multi‑site healthcare environment.
- Deep knowledge of regulatory codes, life safety, environment of care, and healthcare infrastructure.
- Strong financial acumen, including capital planning and budget management.
- Exceptional leadership, communication, and stakeholder‑management skills.
- Ability to lead through change and drive system‑wide standardization.
- Regulatory compliance scores and survey readiness
