Aerospace Ground Equipment Mechanic

ASRC Federal Communications is seeking Aerospace Ground Equipment (AGE) Mechanic for our ISS2 contract supporting our Air Force customer. This position is located on Wake Island, about 2,000 miles off the coast of Hawaii. This is a rotational position in which the selected employee will work a schedule of 3 months on-site at Wake Island and 1 month off unpaid. While working on-site, housing is provided in the form of a dormitory facility.  All meals are furnished through the cafeteria. You are responsible for the flight from your home base to HNL. Transportation from Honolulu to Wake Island is provided by government sponsored aircraft. Under the direction of the Airfield Manager, the AGE Mechanic repairs, services, maintains Aerospace Ground Equipment (AGE), and is responsible for the equipment and tools necessary to perform the work. The incumbent analyzes malfunctions and repairs; rebuilds and maintains power equipment, such as jet engine starters, power supply units, air cycle conditioners, and power generation systems in the field, or in the shop environment. Essential Duties & Job Functions • Works from instructions such as work orders, pre-repair inspection reports, standard operating procedures, technical orders, or oral instructions that provide an indication of possible problems, as well as the kinds and extent of desired repairs. • Troubleshoots and repairs diesel, gasoline, and/or multi-fuel engines; gearing and governing components for controlling, changing or transferring speed and power; hydraulic and pneumatic systems and controls; conditioning (cooling, heating, and dehumidifying) systems; turbine engines; combustion powered generators and compressors, or other comparably complex components, including completely disassembling, reassembling, overhauling, and adjusting to specifications. • Troubleshoots electrical and transistorized sensing and controlling devices, and panels for engines and generators, such as overvoltage, under voltage, over frequency, under frequency, over temperature, fire detection, and low oil pressure. • Examines checks, and tests systems and equipment; determines the type and extent of repairs needed. • Uses a wide range of complex troubleshooting, testing and repairing equipment for mechanical and electrical equipment, including dynamometers, load banks, impedance bridges, multi-meters, equipment and system test cells or stands, flow meter panels, oscilloscopes, turbine engine analyzers and balancing machines; operates less complex equipment such as common mechanic’s tools, voltmeters, ohmmeters, pressure gages, leak detectors, drills, and hones. • Reads and uses technical manuals, illustrations, diagrams, schematics, and similar guides covering the complete assembly; troubleshoot and layout of powered support systems. • Informs supervisor of any extensive changes to previously specified or anticipated repairs and limitations; completes approved work in accordance with existing guidelines or instructions. • Uses experience and judgment to determine why engines, electrical components, hydraulic or pneumatic systems etc. fail to operate or meet performance specifications and requirements; selects best repair technique. • Interfaces with Air Force, AMC contract, and other government personnel as needed. • Follows safety procedures and uses proper protective equipment. • Ensures maintenance and correct storage of all tools and equipment. • Supports the project Safety Plan through personal involvement in all aspects of safety, including training, as well as attention and adherence to applicable safety requirements. • Serves as Airfield Operations Lead as required. • Serves as BASH Technician as required. • Provides flight line services as required. • Ensures proper housekeeping practices are observed. • Performs related work as assigned.   Accountable For: • Knowledge of the basic principles behind the operation of AC and DC electrical power generation systems; combustion powered reciprocating engines; turbine engines; multi-drive gear units; heating and cooling systems; pneumatic, hydraulic, and pneudraulic systems; pressure regulators; electrical switching, harness wiring, and metering systems. • The use of common office machinery, including copiers, fax machines, and computers. • Working professionally with a variety of people and personalities. • Meeting deadlines and handling potentially highly stressful situations. • Communicating effectively, both orally and in writing.   Work Conditions: The employee is regularly required to talk and hear to understand instructions, provide information, and respond to safety warnings. Work conditions require the employee to stand; climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; taste or smell; and work on scaffolding and ladders. The employee may frequently lift and/or move objects weighing up to 50 pounds without assistance and lift and/or move heavier objects with assistance.   Job Requirements (Education, Experience, Professional Associations): Mandatory • High school diploma or equivalent. • Five (5) years’ experience working with Aerospace Ground Equipment (AGE). • Proficient computer skills and ability to utilize MS Office Suite, and a variety of databases. • Valid state drivers’ license with an acceptable driving record. • Obtain and maintain a secret clearance. • Must pass a background check, drug screening, fingerprints, and a fit-for-duty physical exam; candidates must be medically cleared for long-term residency in a remote location with limited access to healthcare.   Preferred • Certification as an Airfield Manager of FAA equivalent. • Working knowledge of the Bird Aircraft Strike Hazard (BASH) program. • Experience with forklifts, standard and all-terrain.
