Painter/Blaster II

This job description outlines the duties for which the Painter/Blaster II position will be accountable and responsible. Its purpose is to facilitate the employee's success within the chain of command by ensuring effective, efficient, and quality painting of products. Additionally, other duties may be assigned to the Painter/Blaster II when painting tasks are not available.

At the core of Vital Link, Inc.'s business lies the fabrication of structural steel for commercial, industrial, and military applications, as well as the fabrication of various acoustical products, assemblies, and special products for sound suppression applications. The role of the Painter/Blaster II is primarily to ensure the proper finishing of all assemblies, including painting and galvanizing, before shipment. This position demands experience and expertise in air and airless spray painting, particularly in operating such paint equipment. It also requires proficiency in comprehending and executing paint manufacturer's instructions, Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), sequencing work, and appropriately handling and setting up heavy materials manually, with overhead cranes, and using forklifts.

Ensure that parts and assemblies are cleaned and blasted according to shop drawings, cut sheets, and manufacturer's instructions.

Follow and document all steps, inspections, and instructions outlined on work control sheets and manufacturer's guidelines. Maintain material and part identification during finish activities.

Notify VLI Supervision/Management in advance of required supplies such as primers, paints, thinners, and miscellaneous equipment. Report any design or detailed errors to the Prefab Supervisor or Director of Plant Operations.

Design tables, supports, and fixtures necessary to support assemblies and components during finish work.

Coordinate work with other workers and department Supervisors.

Ensure the use of appropriate safety practices, equipment, and gear.

Promptly report equipment and machinery problems to the Maintenance Department or Management.

Halt production on equipment if safety is compromised.

Maintain the finish area, equipment, tools, and supplies in a neat and orderly manner. Responsible for upkeep of the paint shed, including marking, storage, and container preparation for disposal by the Maintenance Department.

Coordinate loading activities with the Shipping and Receiving Department. This includes loading parts for galvanizing and organizing the return or final shipment of galvanized materials.

Notify management in advance when supplies, such as thinner, paint, and filters, are needed to ensure timely procurement before depletion.

Perform other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring an efficient and effective work environment.

Ensure activities are conducted in accordance with Vital Link International Standards Organization (ISO9000) policies and correct and report any deviations to appropriate area manager/supervisor.

Participate in Vital Link Continuous Improvement activities as appropriate.

A high school degree is preferred but not required.

3 years’ experience is preferred, the deciding factors will be skill, knowledge, and discipline.

Proficiency in paint equipment application, maintenance, and troubleshooting is essential.

Experience in mixing various types of coatings to minimize application issues is also required.

Full range of body movements required, including manual handling of objects, climbing, bending, reaching, stooping, and crouching for prolonged periods.

Standing, stooping, crouching, and bending for extended durations.

Specific vision abilities needed, such as close vision, depth perception, and the capability to focus on subtle shades and shadows.

Ability to regularly lift moderate to heavy steel parts, equipment, and supplies. Physical capability for finishing work, moderate to heavy lifting, and the ability to work while wearing a respirator and other protective gear is required.

This position primarily involves outdoor work in all weather conditions. The Painter/Blaster II is exposed to substantial amounts of potentially hazardous dust and fumes, necessitating the use of safety glasses or goggles, NACE approved masks, and respirator safety equipment.

The work environment often has high noise levels, necessitating hearing protection.

The standard work schedule is typically eight to ten-hour workdays, five days per week, with occasional weekend work and additional early or late shifts as needed to accommodate special business circumstances.
