How You Will Make an Impact:
The Commissioning Technician II independently executes commissioning activities on natural gas generation fleets, battery energy storage systems (BESS), power distribution, and balance of plant equipment. This role owns assigned systems and test packages end to end, leads engine startup and first fire, executes load bank and BESS commissioning, supports island mode and black start operation on off-grid plants, resolves commissioning issues, and maintains the documentation that proves a system is ready to energize. The Commissioning Technician II also mentors junior technicians and is the second step in the Atlas commissioning career path.
Responsibilities
- Independently perform functional testing, loop checks, energization, synchronization, and system validation on assigned equipment and systems.
- Execute commissioning of natural gas generation units, power distribution, and balance of plant equipment with limited supervision.
- Own assigned commissioning packages end to end, including test planning, execution, documentation, and turnover.
- Lead engine startup and first fire activities on natural gas generation units, including pre-start verification, fuel gas system commissioning, cooling and lube system checks, and engine controls checkout.
- Execute load bank testing and load-share tuning across multiple generation units, and support performance and emissions testing.
- Commission battery energy storage systems (BESS) and inverter-based equipment, including inverter and battery management system checkout, communications verification, and charge and discharge testing.
- Support island mode and black start commissioning, including verification of generator sequencing, load acceptance, and system stability on off-grid plants.
- Perform electrical acceptance tests such as insulation resistance, contact resistance, winding resistance, ratio, and timing tests using industry-standard equipment.
- Support protective relay testing, control logic verification, and SCADA/RTU input-output checks in coordination with engineering.
- Diagnose and resolve commissioning issues, determining root cause and coordinating corrective action with construction, engineering, and vendor personnel.
- Verify field installation against one-line diagrams, schematics, and vendor drawings, and produce accurate redline markups for as-built records.
- Maintain complete and accurate test reports, punch lists, deficiency logs, and turnover documentation.
- Provide technical direction and on-the-job training to Commissioning Technician I personnel.
- Coordinate directly with site leadership, contractors, and equipment vendors on commissioning schedule, readiness, and open items.
- Follow all safety protocols, including energy isolation lockout/tagout (LOTO), NFPA 70E electrical safety practices, and site-specific requirements.

Qualifications
- Required:
- High school diploma or GED required
- 3–5 years of experience in commissioning, construction, or maintenance of power generation or utility-scale electrical systems
- Hands-on experience commissioning or testing natural gas or reciprocating engine generation, switchgear, transformers, or related power equipment
- Experience with engine startup, fuel gas systems, load bank testing, or engine controls
- Ability to read, interpret, and verify electrical schematics, one-line diagrams, P&IDs, control logic, and vendor technical documentation
- Proficiency with commissioning and electrical test equipment, and the ability to interpret test results independently
- Strong electrical and mechanical troubleshooting skills, with the ability to work through complex issues to root cause
- Ability to work independently in the field with limited supervision
- Working knowledge of electrical safety standards, including lockout/tagout (LOTO) and NFPA 70E
- Effective verbal and written communication skills, with strong documentation discipline
- Ability and willingness to travel to project sites, including overnight stays
- Valid Driver’s License and qualified through our company insurance/Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) Policy
- Preferred:
- Technical certificate or associate degree in electrical technology, power systems, instrumentation, or a related discipline
- OSHA 10 or 30 and NFPA 70E electrical safety certification
- NETA or NICET certification, or equivalent industry credential
- Experience with protective relays and relay test sets from manufacturers such as SEL, GE, ABB, Siemens, or Basler
- Experience with test equipment such as Megger, Doble, Vanguard, or Omicron
- Experience commissioning battery energy storage systems (BESS) or inverter-based resources
- Experience with islanded, black start, off-grid, or behind-the-meter generation facilities
- Experience with emissions equipment and performance or emissions testing
- Familiarity with NETA acceptance testing specifications, IEEE, and NERC standards
Work Location & Travel Requirements
- Location: West Texas
- Work Environment: Field, Shop, and Outdoors; active construction and industrial plant environments, including work in and around energized electrical equipment
- Travel %: Project-based travel expected
Schedule/Work Arrangement: Rotational schedule to be determined
Physical Demands:
- Regular use of hands to handle, finger, and reach tools, test equipment, and materials
- Required to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, and climb as needed, including work at elevation and in confined spaces
- Must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and heavier items with appropriate assistance or mechanical equipment
- Required vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus
- Must be able to work in and around energized electrical equipment while wearing required personal protective equipment
- Must be able to tolerate conditions associated with field and construction environments, including heat, cold, dust, noise, and limited climate control
