Director of Point-of-Care Ultrasound - Part-time

The Atria Health Institute is a membership-based primary and specialty health care practice with a focus on prevention and longevity. All care, including primary care, advanced screening and diagnostics, urgent care, specialty care, 24/7 home visits, and imaging is included in members’ annual fee.

After successfully opening our flagship Institute in New York in 2022 and expanding to South Florida in 2024, we are now bringing the Atria experience to the West Coast with the launch of our Los Angeles Institute in late spring 2026.

About the role

Atria uses point-of-care ultrasound at the bedside in every setting where we deliver care. Our clinicians scan in the Institute using our GE ultrasound equipment, and in members' homes using handheld Butterfly devices. The Director of Point-of-Care Ultrasound builds the program that makes this consistent, credentialed, and clinically reliable across the enterprise.

The role spans training, credentialing, image quality, workflow integration, and the technology roadmap. You will work in close partnership with our Director of Radiology, who co-owns credentialing and image quality review with you. Your collaborators extend across pediatrics, urgent care advanced care providers, Home Services nursing, and primary care clinicians, as well as cardiology and other specialties where point-of-care diagnostics are part of practice.

This is a role for a physician who wants to bring emerging technology to the bedside. We are looking for someone who will evaluate and deploy AI-enabled acquisition and interpretation tools as they mature, and who will make point-of-care ultrasound a dependable part of how our clinicians think, in the Institute and in the home.

The position is expected to grow. We anticipate scope and time allocation expanding as the program matures.

This position is held concurrently with an emergency medicine appointment at Atria, either per diem, part-time or full-time. Physicians already practicing with Atria and candidates applying for our emergency medicine openings are both eligible.

Responsibilities

• Co-own the point-of-care ultrasound credentialing and privileging pathway with the Director of Radiology, including competency criteria, scope of practice by clinician type, and re-credentialing intervals.
• Co-own image quality review with Radiology, including the review sampling approach, the feedback loop to individual clinicians, and escalation when point-of-care findings and formal imaging diverge.
• Define which applications are approved for which clinician groups and in which settings.
• Author and maintain protocols and Guru documentation, and bring policy changes through the Clinical Policy Committee.
• Report program metrics to the Chair of Home Services and Urgent Care, including scan volume, competency status by clinician, and quality findings.

• Build and run the training curriculum for pediatric and adult clinicians across urgent care, Home Services nursing, primary care, cardiology, and other specialties.
• Provide hands-on proctorship and scanning supervision, including in-home use of handheld devices, where image acquisition conditions differ from the Institute.
• Support onboarding for new clinicians, and maintain a pathway for clinicians moving from introductory to independent scanning.
• Serve as the clinical escalation point for image interpretation questions at the bedside.

• Partner with Radiology on selection, deployment, and maintenance of ultrasound equipment across sites, spanning our GE systems in the Institute and Butterfly devices in the home.
• Own the image capture, archiving, and documentation workflow so that studies are retrievable, attributable, and reportable within Athena and our imaging archive.
• Evaluate, pilot, and where validated, deploy AI-enabled acquisition guidance and interpretation tools.
• Track the evidence base and vendor landscape, and advise clinical leadership on where point-of-care diagnostics should expand next.

• Lead quality improvement work tied to point-of-care ultrasound, including diagnostic concordance review, time-to-diagnosis, and reduction of avoidable downstream imaging.
• Support the operational side of the program, including device inventory and readiness across sites, licensing and storage costs, and scheduling of training time against clinical coverage.
• Teach and precept the clinical support staff who use these tools day to day, including advanced care providers, Home Services nurses, and medical assistants.
• Participate in research and collaborate with the Atria Academy of Science & Medicine on point-of-care diagnostics, including study design, publication, and evaluation of new applications in the home setting.

Cardiac point-of-care ultrasound, including limited cardiac views, sits within this role's remit, developed in coordination with our cardiology team.

Part-time Compensation: $93,750 - $103,750

Requirements

• Residency trained and board certified in Emergency Medicine by ABEM or AOBEM.
• Concurrent emergency medicine appointment at Atria, per diem or full-time. Candidates may apply for both positions together.
• Advanced point-of-care ultrasound training. This may be an ultrasound fellowship, the ABEM Focused Practice Designation in Advanced Emergency Medicine Ultrasonography, or an equivalent portfolio with documented scan volume across applications.
• Demonstrated teaching experience with clinicians at varied skill levels, including advanced care providers and nurses.
• Experience building or running a point-of-care ultrasound program, including competency assessment and quality review.
• Working knowledge of image archiving, documentation, and reporting workflows.
• Familiarity with handheld ultrasound and cloud-based image management.
• Active New York medical license, or eligibility.
• Willingness to travel periodically to Atria sites in Greenwich, the Hamptons, Palm Beach, Miami, and Los Angeles.
