Responsibilities

  • Periodic as needed work attempting to purchase alcohol, kratom, marijuana, and other age restricted products while working with Licensing staff.
  • Ability to testify at administrative hearings or in court.
  • Work schedule will work around class schedules and other employment.
  • Incumbents will attempt to purchase regulated products including showing their identification or providing a truthful or false response to age related questions depending on the nature of the investigation. 
  • Licensing personnel will be present outside or inside of the licensed business monitoring the attempted purchase.  Work will involve getting into and out of a vehicle at various locations during a single shift.
  • Additional work may be required for testimony at a civil or criminal proceeding under oath.

The hiring range for this position is $17.18 - $21.48/hourly

**This job announcement is for collecting candidate applications for current and future Licensing Underage Minor Operative. Applicants will be contacted only when a position need is identified, and qualifications match the needs of the position. ** 

The Licensing Division enforces and administers the city’s licensing codes and works to ensure that the City’s regulated business industry is clean and adequately regulated. This position will assist the division in enforcing prohibitions against liquor and marijuana being sold to people under the age of 21 and protecting public health, safety and welfare. The position will be attempting to purchase alcohol and tobacco products from licensed retailers.

An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.

  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills
  • Proven ability to work independently as well as to accept supervision during operations
  • Two years of high school completion

  • Must possess and maintain a valid State Issued Identification Card (ID) or Driver License
  • When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the city, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel.
  • Light work that involves moving no more than 20 pounds at a time
  • Frequently getting into and out of a vehicle and opening doors to enter and exit businesses. 
  • Throughout the city at various businesses in various weather conditions and environments. 
  • Identification card or driver's license
  • Cell phone or city provided recording or communications device

The city of Aurora will implement furlough days (unpaid days off) for most employees in 2026. The scheduled furlough dates are January 16, April 10, July 2, and December 24.

Safety sensitive positions include Civil Service positions within Police and Fire Departments and positions where their job responsibilities have direct and substantial responsibility that would impact the health and safety of others.
