  • Apply expert engineering knowledge and understanding to deliver assigned projects 
  • Apply expert project management principles to deliver assigned projects 
  • Review and make recommendations for the project delivery process 
  • Coach and mentor project management team members  
  • Independently represent the department in multiple internal and external settings

The hiring range for this position is $103,395 - $129,244 per year.

OVERVIEW OF JOB / DEPARTMENT

On the Aurora Water Project Delivery Services Team, the Senior Engineer is responsible for the procurement and management of consultants and contractors for the delivery of complex capital improvement projects. In addition to project delivery, they mentor project management staff, provide technical guidance, and identify opportunities to improve internal processes and project management standards.

An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered. 

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution  
     

  • Eight (8) years of experience in progressively responsible project management including one year of leadership or managerial experience 
  • PE (or equivalent) registration in the State of Colorado, or ability to obtain licensure within six months.  
  • Project Management Profession (PMP) certification preferred 
  • Driver's license with a good driving history 

  • Knowledge of Engineering principles, practices, theories, and techniques related to infrastructure planning and project management 
  • Understanding of the principles, practices, financial management and operating requirements of a water utility 

  • Strong interpersonal, analytical, project management, and leadership skills 
  • Effective written and oral communication  

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and citizens  
  • Handle sensitive situations with tact and diplomacy  
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing  
  • Establish and fulfill goals and objectives  
  • Plan and schedule work unit operations  
  • Handle multiple projects simultaneously and use good judgment in prioritizing work assignments  
  • Independently represent the department in multiple internal and external settings  
  • Make decisions consistent with City of Aurora values and Water vision and mission. 

WORKING CONDITIONS 

  • When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the City, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel.  

  • Primarily sedentary physical work requiring the ability to lift a maximum of 10 pounds 
  • Occasional lifting, carrying, walking and standing 
  • Frequent hand/eye coordination to operate office equipment 
  • Vision for reading, recording and interpreting information 
  • Frequent speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees and citizens 

  • Works primarily in clean, comfortable environment; in an office 
  • Field visits to active construction sites may be required. 

  • Uses standard office equipment including copy machines, printers/plotters, personal computer, mobile devices, and common office software such as email, internet, Windows-based applications, and GIS applications 
  • This position may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment.

The city of Aurora will implement furlough days (unpaid days off) for most employees in 2026. The scheduled furlough dates are January 16, April 10, July 2, and December 24.
