About This Position

 

This position provides direction and leadership for a division within Austin Parks and Recreation for the City of Austin.

Responsibilities

    Plans, organizes, directs, and reviews development and coordination of a division within Austin Parks and Recreation.

  • →

    Estimates, prepares, and proposes the division's annual budget.

  • →

    Monitors and authorizes expenses and expenditures.

  • →

    Develops annual and long-term range goals and objectives.

  • →

    Collaborates with other departments and agencies, such as schools, businesses, etc.

  • →

    Provides advice and assistance to citizens, contractors, management, etc.

  • →

    Works with public and advisory boards to resolve issues and conflicts.

  • →

    Plans Capital Improvement Projects.

  • →

    Performs contract management duties, such as negotiating, approving, and monitoring contracts.

  • →

    Conducts and attends meetings, conferences, seminars, etc.

  • →

    Responsible for the full range of supervisory activities including selection, training, evaluation, counseling and recommendation for dismissal.

Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.

  • Knowledge of Federal, State, and Local laws.

  • Knowledge of City practice, policy and procedures.

  • Knowledge of fiscal planning and budget preparation.

  • Knowledge of supervisory and managerial techniques and methods.

  • Skill in oral and written communication.

  • Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.

  • Skill in using computers and related software.

  • Skill in data analysis and problem solving.

  • Skill in planning and organizing.

  • Ability to work with frequent interruptions and changes in priorities.

  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with other City employees and the public.

Requirements

  • Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in a field related to Business Administration, Public Administration, or related/relevant field, plus eight (8) years of planning, directing, and organizing experience, two (2) of which were in a supervisory or management capacity.

  • Experience managing multiple community recreation facilities.

  • Experience conducting community stakeholder engagement and board meetings.

  • Experience with recreational programming including organizing staff development training workshops.

  • Experience with public speaking, public presentation, and adult training workshops.

  • Experience developing public/private partnerships.

  • Experience with Governmental contract management and compliance.

    • Travel: If you are selected for this position and meet the Driver Safety Standards in the City of Austin Driver Safety Program, you will drive when necessary to multiple locations as part of your regular job duties. Otherwise, you are responsible for getting to and from these locations.

    • 90 Day Provision for Additional Vacancy: This posting may be used to fill other vacancies in other divisions/work locations within the City of Austin Parks and Recreation Department. Decisions on assigned selection will be made at the time of hire based on the business needs of the department.
