About This Position

 

Meets with neighborhood residents, leaders, and community groups to identify needs and available resources. Coordinates, plans, and develops programs and activities to address resident's economic, social service, and community improvement needs and/or improves coordination of existing services. Develops and implements a variety of health and/or safety promotions, outreach, and education efforts. Coordinates volunteer programs and trains residents in neighborhood support activities, including grant writing. Supports Self-Reliant Neighborhood activities for neighborhood improvement. Assists in the establishment or revitalization of neighborhood associations and neighborhood watch blocks. Represents the City of Austin before community groups. Writes, drafts, and completes reports and/or documents.

Under general direction, this position conducts and coordinates a variety of leadership, public safety, health, and social services outreach or community development activities; engages residents in activities and efforts that will improve quality of life, safety, and neighborhood appearance.

Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.

  • Knowledge of local City, State, Federal, and private service providers and funding sources.

  • Knowledge of community organizing and neighborhood development techniques.

  • Skill in planning, coordinating and implementing community programs and activities.

  • Skill in developing new initiatives and working with service providers to plan and coordinate services.

  • Skill in establishing and maintaining good working relationships with the public and making effective use of community resources.

  • Skill in working with community representatives to identify and address local needs.

  • Skill in oral and written communications.

  • Skill in interpreting, organizing, coordinating and executing assignments, projects and programs.

  • Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.

  • Skill in conflict resolution and negotiation.

  • Skill in using computers and related software applications.

  • Skill in data analysis and problem solving.

  • Ability to work with frequent interruptions and changes in priorities.

  • Ability to work well with individuals from a variety of different backgrounds and experience, including community leaders, residents, service providers, local officials and elected representatives.

Requirements

  • Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Social Work, Public Policy, Public Health, or in a field related to the job. Three (3) years experience in community outreach or neighborhood wide community programs.

  • Masters Degree from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in Social Work, Public Policy, Public Health, or in a field related to the job, may substitute for one year related work experience.

  • Experience may substitute for education up to a maximum of four (4) years.

  • Fluent (read, write, & speak) in Spanish or other language and English.

  • Experience in Community Outreach.

  • Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, Power point, Outlook

  • Experience working with Law Enforcement.

  • Experience in customer service

  • Ability to travel to more than one work location.

  • Ability to work some weekends and evenings.

  • None.
