About the Role

The Tax Manager is responsible for managing and reviewing sales tax compliance, audits, and taxability support for multi-state retail and e-commerce operations. This role serves as the primary owner of indirect tax compliance and acts as a key internal reviewer for corporate income tax and tax provision matters prepared by external service providers, including federal and state income tax compliance deliverables, estimated tax payments, tax reconciliations, and U.S. GAAP/IFRS tax provision support. The role also coordinates tax compliance matters in Canada and Mexico through external tax advisors. This position requires strong technical judgment, project management capability, cross-functional communication, and the ability to improve tax processes, controls, and documentation standards in a fast-paced retail environment.

Schedule: Monday - Friday, 9:00 am - 6:00 pm PST.

Work Model: 3 days onsite, 2 days telecommuting

 

Responsibilities

  • Manage and review sales tax compliance for retail stores and e-commerce operations across applicable U.S. and Canadian state/provincial and local jurisdictions, ensuring timely and accurate filings and payments
  • Review reconciliations of exempt sales, returns, discounts, gift card activity, payment settlements, bank deposits, and general ledger balances to tax return workpapers
  • Oversee preparation and maintenance of sales tax return support, journal entries, account reconciliations, exemption certificates, audit-ready documentation, and internal control evidence
  • Monitor registrations, permits, resale certificates, business licenses, and filing obligations for new store openings, relocations, closures, marketplace activity, and expansion into new jurisdictions
  • Lead taxability analysis for retail products and transactions, including product tax codes, shipping charges, discounts, coupons, loyalty programs, samples, promotional items, and consumer use tax considerations
  • Manage responses to sales tax audits, notices, refund claims, voluntary disclosure projects, and correspondence with taxing authorities, including coordination of supporting schedules and documentation
  • Coordinate with external tax advisors and review corporate income tax compliance deliverables, including federal and state income tax returns and workpapers, estimated tax payments, apportionment, book-to-tax adjustments, tax depreciation, and related account reconciliations; ensure completeness, consistency with company financial records, and timely resolution of review comments and tax issues
  • Coordinate and review quarterly and annual U.S. GAAP/IFRS tax provision deliverables prepared by external tax advisors, including current and deferred tax, effective tax rate, uncertain tax positions, and provision-to-return true-up analysis; review key assumptions, supporting schedules, and significant tax positions and coordinate follow-up questions and adjustments with external advisors and internal finance stakeholders
  • Manage relationships with external tax advisors for corporate income tax compliance and tax provision matters, including coordinating deliverables, tracking open issues, and ensuring timely completion of filings and provision activities
  • Coordinate tax compliance matters in Canada and Mexico through external tax advisors, including monitoring filing requirements, reviewing tax compliance deliverables, tracking payments and deadlines, and coordinating responses to tax notices or other tax-related matters (direct tax preparation and technical filings are generally handled by external advisors)
  • Identify process improvement opportunities, develop tax compliance calendars and review checklists, and support automation initiatives for retail tax reporting and reconciliation workflows
  • Perform other tax compliance, accounting, reporting, and special projects as assigned

 

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Taxation, Finance, Business, or a related field
  • Professional proficiency in English and Korean, required to review tax documentation and communicate with the Korea-based parent company and external stakeholders
  • 5-7 years of relevant tax, accounting, or finance experience, including at least 3 years of hands-on sales and use tax compliance experience; experience with corporate income tax compliance, tax provision, or review of deliverables prepared by external tax advisors is required
  • Prior experience managing or reviewing sales and use tax returns, reconciliations, exemption certificates, taxability determinations, audits, notices, and refund claims
  • Experience coordinating with external tax advisors and reviewing corporate income tax compliance and U.S. GAAP/IFRS tax provision deliverables
  • Experience analyzing POS, ERP (SAP), payment processor, bank, and general ledger data
  • Advanced Excel skills, including large data analysis, reconciliations, pivot tables, lookups, exception tracking, and audit support schedules
  • Strong attention to detail, ownership, communication, and deadline management, with the ability to work independently while escalating issues appropriately

Nice to Have

  • CPA or other relevant tax/accounting certification
  • Experience with SAP, QuickBooks, tax compliance software, or tax automation tools
  • Experience working with external tax advisors on U.S. corporate income tax, tax provision, and/or international tax compliance matters
  • Exposure to Canadian or Mexican tax compliance

 

We are looking for a detail-oriented tax professional who can independently manage multi-state sales and use tax compliance while serving as a strong technical reviewer of corporate income tax and provision work prepared by external advisors. The ideal candidate combines deep knowledge of retail taxability and reconciliation processes with excellent project management and cross-functional communication skills, and brings a proactive mindset toward tax law updates and toward improving tax processes, controls, and documentation in a fast-paced retail environment.
