Thesis – Exploring Wi-Fi Sensing for Future Intercom Applications

Wireless Communications, Machine Learning, and Embedded Systems

Scope

1-2 Master thesis students or 2 Bachelor thesis students

Could Wi-Fi help an intercom detect an approaching visitor or determine whether someone is still waiting nearby? Wi-Fi signals are affected by people and objects, and research shows that channel state information (CSI) can be used to explore presence detection without requiring people to carry a connected device.

This thesis, hosted by the Intercom Product SW team, will investigate Wi-Fi sensing for future intercom applications. Since current intercoms lack native Wi-Fi, experiments may use a suitable Axis device, an external Wi-Fi module, or a Raspberry Pi-based platform. Access to useful radio measurements will be investigated at the start. The final scope will be shaped by hardware feasibility, initial experiments, and the students’ interests and background.

  • Investigate available radio measurements and establish a suitable experimental platform.
  • Develop and evaluate presence detection for entrance scenarios, distinguishing movement from continued presence, and considering false triggers.
  • Implement a proof of concept and assess requirements for future intercom integration.

Who are you?

We welcome students interested in wireless sensing, signal processing, embedded software, or machine learning. You might be studying a master’s program in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics, or a related area. A systematic approach to experiments and an interest in working with real hardware are valuable.

You are valuable to us – how nice that you are interested in one of our proposals! There are a few things for you to keep in mind when applying.

  • Applications are accepted in both Swedish and English, and you apply via the proposal advert.
  • The announced thesis is open only to students affiliated with a Swedish University/College either directly or via an exchange program.
  • When the thesis proposal states that it includes two students working together, we would like you to apply in pairs. In these cases, send one application each but make sure to clearly state in your application who your co-applicant is. If you have any questions regarding this, please do not hesitate to contact us.
  • Please attach your CV and University/College grade summary.
