In busy scenes, background noise can make it difficult to hear and communicate through audio devices. Automatic volume control addresses this by measuring the noise level and adjusting the audio accordingly. However, current implementations do not use video information to anticipate changes in noise. These systems are reactive: they adjust only after the noise level has changed, which can create a delay before the audio is adapted. Video analytics, such as detecting the number of people or objects in a scene, may provide information that helps predict an increase in background noise before it occurs.
This thesis will explore whether video can be used to make audio adjustment more proactive. The work may also investigate whether information from multiple nearby devices, or from different sensors within a device, can improve predictions of changes in the noise level. The key challenge is to use these predictions to adjust audio without reducing speech intelligibility.
The goal is to investigate methods for using scene information to anticipate changes in background noise and adjust audio accordingly. The resulting audio should respond smoothly to noise levels and help maintain speech intelligibility during calls.
Master or Bachelor student in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
