A WWW Division Manager II oversees the Surface Water Management, Utility Maintenance or Engineering Division of the Bureau of Water and Waste Water in the Department of Public Works and reports directly to the Bureau Head. Work of this class involves directing the activities of administrative and engineering, laboratory or utility maintenance work units.

Employees of this class receive managerial direction from a technical superior. Employees in this class work a conventional workweek that may involve evening and weekend hours as well as 24-hour call back in emergency situations. While work is primarily performed in an office setting with normal working conditions, it also requires occasional field visits. Work requires minimal physical exertion.

This class is distinguished from that of WWW Division Manager I in that an employee in this class oversees the Division of Surface Water management, Utility Maintenance or the Engineering Division of the Bureau of Water and Waste Water and provides technical oversight of engineers or scientists or a division of over 600 employees engaged in work with high visibility and immediate impact on the public welfare.

  • In the Bureau of Water and Waste Water of the Department of Public Works, plans, directs, coordinates and evaluates, through subordinate supervisors, various operating activities and programs within the storm water management, utility maintenance or engineering division of the bureau.
  • Oversees the personnel activities of the division, including training of employees; evaluates the performance of, disciplines, and recommends the hiring, firing and promoting of supervisors, administrative and office support staff.
  • Develops, recommends and oversees changes to division goals, policies, practices and operations to ensure cost-effective operations and compliance with City, State and Federal water and waste water requirements and regulations.
  • Oversees and ensures compliance with Federal, State and locals rules and regulations; accounts to Federal and State authorities for compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Researches and prepares narrative and statistical reports on the status of programs and speaks and/or testifies before governmental councils and commissions and business and community groups on division projects.
  • Directs the requisitioning of equipment, supplies and materials for construction,
  • maintenance and inspection activities.
  • May advise public officials regarding Bureau of Water and Waste Water programs, operations, activities, long-range goals, problems, responses to emergency situations and new or amended legislation.
  • Performs related work as required.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of water and waste water utility administration.
  • Knowledge of water and waste water operations and programs.
  • Knowledge of management practices and methods.
  • Skill in planning, directing, coordinating and evaluating the various operations, programs and activities of a water and waste water operation.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Managerial ability and supervisory ability.

Eligible candidates under final consideration for appointment to positions identified as positions of trust will be required to complete authorization for a Criminal Background Check and/or Fingerprint must be successfully completed. 

All persons, including current City employees, selected for this position must complete a mandatory six-month probation.
