About the Organization:

The Barrie Area Native Advisory Circle (BANAC) is an Indigenous governed, Indigenous led regional social planning and development organization. The BANAC service region now covers Simcoe County, Muskoka, and York region. BANAC works in cooperation with Indigenous communities and non-Indigenous organizations to address community-identified priorities through coordinated planning, implementation and evaluation. BANAC has a mandate to support the continued promotion of Indigenous lifelong learning and community wellness through self-determination and community participation. 

BANAC offers many innovative programs and services including Aging Well Senior Supports, Bebminot Family Wellness, the Biinoojinsauk Child Care Centre, Maapii Enjii Zaagi Gaazwad and the Mamaway Wiidokdaadwin Indigenous Interprofessional Primary Care Team.  Mamaway Wiidokdaadwin offers a wholistic approach to wellness that includes traditional healing practices in primary care, community clinics, addiction and recovery services, counselling programs, midwifery, land-based healing programs, and community health promotion. 

About the Role:

This position operates within an Indigenous-led and Indigenous-governed organization that is accountable to the communities it serves. Work is grounded in the principle of Indigenous Health in Indigenous Hands, ensuring that all programs and services are developed, delivered, and evaluated under Indigenous governance structures and community direction. In alignment with Indigenous and provincial standards, the organization upholds excellence in care, accountability, and compliance while centering on Indigenous knowledge systems, cultural safety, and self-determination in health and social service deliverables.

This position is being posted in response to an existing vacancy at the Barrie Area Native Advisory Circle.

The Health Information Specialist leads the technical configuration, optimization, and integrity of BANAC’s EMR and digital health systems. This role focuses on strengthening data infrastructure, supporting high-quality reporting, and ensuring data systems are reliable, accessible, and aligned with organizational needs. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with advanced experience in health informatics or digital health who enjoys building and improving systems that support community-based care and decision-making.

EMR and Technology Infrastructure

• Serve as a primary technical resource on the Telus PS Suite EMR, including system configuration, user access, and optimization of data capture workflows.
• Act as the Local Regional Authority (LRA) for BANAC to configure and monitor access to clinical systems (e.g., Clinical Connect, OLIS, HRM).
• Manage integration of the Ocean platform (online booking, forms management, appointment reminders) and other third-party digital health tools (e.g., AI Scribe, Cliniconex).
• Identify and address gaps in technology infrastructure that impede timely data collection, verification, or reporting.
• Liaise with vendors, healthcare partners, and IT providers to ensure digital health systems are functioning, current, and aligned with organizational needs.
• Support the implementation and maintenance of new digital health tools as directed by the Director of Research and Evaluation.
• Ensure technology solutions are set up in a way that supports the organization’s data and reporting requirements.

Data Quality, Integrity, and Reporting Infrastructure

• Develop and maintain systems and processes that ensure data is consistently entered, cleaned, validated, and available for extraction.
• Prepare data and reports for internal and external stakeholders including the Ministry of Health (MoH), Ontario Health, IPHCC, Alliance for Healthier Communities, and other funders, as directed by the Director of Research and Evaluation.
• Develop and implement data audit and security protocols; monitor appropriate access to data and maintain compliance with legislative requirements.
• Assess underlying causes of poor data quality and identify technical solutions to prevent and correct errors to present to the BANAC Operations Team.
• Develop and run data feedback reports and data checking routines to support ongoing data integrity.
• Collaborate with internal teams to develop metrics and tracking methods as new funding becomes available.
• Maintain dashboards, databases, and reporting tools to support the Research and Evaluation team.

Decision Support and Analytical Assistance

• Provide technical and analytical support to the Operations Team and organizational leadership by ensuring high-quality data is extracted, organized, and accessible for review and interpretation.
• Respond to requests for data pulls, custom reports, and ad hoc analyses as directed by the Director of Research and Evaluation.
• Identify gaps in data availability and recommend technical solutions to address them; implementation of solutions is subject to direction from the Director of Research and Evaluation.
• Support the preparation of information for internal and external reports including but not limited to AGM reporting, annual operating plans, and funding proposals as directed.

Supervision and Coordination

• Support the Health Information Coordinator in EMR maintenance tasks, training delivery, and custom report and form development.
• Collaborate with the Coordinator to ensure data infrastructure is well-maintained and supports the organization’s needs.

Professional Development

• Participate in professional development activities to enhance knowledge and skills related to health informatics, data systems, and Indigenous health.

What You Bring:

• Degree in Health Informatics, Data Analytics, Computer Science, or a related field
• 3–5 years’ experience in a healthcare or data-focused role, including experience working with EMR systems and report development
• Strong applied knowledge of EMR/EHR systems; experience with Telus PS Suite is considered an asset
• Experience with SQL-based query development and reporting tools (e.g., LogiReports, BIRT)
• Experience with digital health tools (e.g., Ocean platform, eReferral, AI Scribe) is considered an asset
• Strong proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Power BI, SharePoint, and Office 365
• Strong understanding of healthcare data privacy and governance (e.g., PHIPA, FIPPA)
• Strong analytical skills and ability to identify and resolve data quality issues
• Ability to present and communicate data clearly to diverse audiences
• Strong organizational skills and ability to manage competing priorities
• Experience in Indigenous health, community-based settings, or applying culturally grounded approaches to data is considered a strong asset

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

• Work is typically performed in BANAC clinics, offices and / or in community settings.
• Regular travel to meetings and communities is required; access to a personal vehicle is required.
• Reliable Vehicle – Regional Travel Required.
• Regular overtime work may be required from time to time.
• Low to moderate exposure to noise in the work environment.
• Regular exposure to a moderate level of tension and anxiety due to deadlines, competing political pressures, and the competing needs and demands for limited resources.
• BANAC work site locations are periodically exposed to smoke due to the burning of sacred medicines: tobacco, sweet grass, sage and / or cedar.
