Baxter & Woodman’s Spatial Technology Group has a rewarding opportunity for a GIS Intern. The position will be based out of our Crystal Lake, IL or Milwaukee, WI office and will provide hands-on experience supporting a variety of municipal GIS projects.

This internship will provide exposure to both office-based GIS work and field data collection, with opportunities to work alongside experienced GIS professionals and directly support municipal clients. Successful candidates will possess a strong work ethic, technical problem-solving skills, an interest in GIS technology, and a willingness to learn. The ideal candidate will value teamwork, take pride in producing high-quality work, and be comfortable working on a variety of projects and assignments.

• →Report to the GIS Department Manager for work responsibilities, scheduling, and assignments.
• →Perform GIS mapping, data development, editing, analysis, and quality-control tasks using Esri ArcGIS software.
• →Assist with the development and maintenance of maps, GIS databases, and other geospatial information.
• →Assist with the configuration and support of ArcGIS Online web maps, applications, dashboards, and mobile GIS solutions.
• →Support municipal GIS projects involving utilities, infrastructure, public works, planning, and other local government operations.
• →Perform GPS/GNSS field data collection and verification of utility assets, pavement, signage, ADA infrastructure, as-built information, and other municipal assets.
• →Review and incorporate field-collected information, record drawings, as-built plans, and other source information into GIS.
• →Assist GIS staff with special projects, data analysis, troubleshooting, and development of new GIS solutions.

• →Basic understanding of GIS concepts and an interest in developing practical GIS skills.
• →Familiarity with Esri ArcGIS software, including ArcGIS Pro.
• →Ability and willingness to perform both office-based GIS assignments and outdoor field data collection.
• →Strong technical problem-solving skills and willingness to learn new GIS technologies, applications, and workflows.
• →Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• →Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. as needed for field equipment and project activities.
• →Valid driver’s license.
• →Ability to travel throughout the Chicagoland or southeast Wisconsin area and to municipal client locations as needed.
• →Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel and Word.

• Ongoing pursuit of a four-year degree in Geography, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Geospatial Science, Urban Planning, Environmental Science, or a related field.
